Inspiration 2.0 - Walnut and Old Growth Southern Yellow Pine

This sculpted rocking chair is built from 2'' Canadian Black Walnut and OGSYP accented with Ebony plugs. This is a large version ( 5' 8'' - 6'2'' ).

The leg/headrest design borrows more form the Maloof design with legs extending like horns, with a more stylized bottom curve to the headrest but still using a coopered headrest to keep the grain lines matched to the seat and arms. I used a beautiful piece of OGSYP with perfect straight grain. This piece is part of a small pile of lumber I have that was at some point barn beams that were milled up into 4/4 lumber. sliced it into 2.2mm thick grain matched pieces and use them as the front and back lamination to add a very unique contrast to the Walnut.

Features
- grain matched OGSYP form fitting flexible back braces front and back
- coopered headrest
- exposed Maloof joinery
- hand carved seat, arms, and joints

As with all my chairs I make this one was a joy to build, the Walnut I used was brought from log form all the way to finished piece 100% by myself, cut, dried, milled, sanded, sanded and sanded, finished and even pictured and now brought to the world via the internet.

I have much more detailed pictures on my site, here is a link to the page containing more pictures of this beautiful rocking chair.

You can also watch a few videos showing the build process of this chair and other pieces I build on my Canadian Woodworks Youtube channel.

I was taught by Hal Taylor how to build his version of a Maloof rocking chair, I've since added my own styling to his design inspired by Sam Maloof. The chair retains Hal's main design features, coopered headrest, flexible back supports, arm to leg joint and angled joint at the arm to rear leg joint.

EDIT - I have added a picture blog of the build of this wood rocking chair on my blog - EDIT

Beautiful work! The contrast in wood colors is an added bonus. I've never seen elegant pine furniture that should be in an art gallery.

This chair is actually going to a gallery called The Guild Shop located in Toronto, Ontario. This will be my second gallery showing my pieces. I'm excited!

Paul,

This is a beautiful Rocker and the Walnut doesn't seem to mind , humbly, allowing the OGSYP to be Featured.

A very fresh look and a fine fit and finish.

Thanks for sharing. - Grandpa Len.

I wish you could know how comfortable it is! I have to give credit where credit is due and that belongs to Hal Taylor the re-engineer of this classic Maloof design. Doing the coopered headrest, the perfect lumbar curve to the back braces and of course the wonderful rocking motion derived from the perfect rocker radius!

I could go on and on (-:

ANOTHER gorgeous chair from your shop! The OGYP looks almost like zebrawood. You did your usual fantastic job on this one. I SO want to build one of these but need more skill and confidence. I really appreciate that you took this from tree to finished project. That makes it so much more special but only a woodworker would appreciate the extra effort/skill it takes to do that.

This is about my 25th rocking chair I think, I've done many other chairs as well and I have designed and built many tables in this same style.

My style and understanding the lines of the pieces I build has really evolved over each one I complete.

I have had this OGSYP since grade 9/10, I am now 29 years old. I knew as soon as I started doing the highlighting of the back braces that this piece I had would be awesome used as the back braces on a chair and boy was I right (-:

Beautiful ! So is the SYP "Long Leaf Pine" or "Loblolly Pine". I just got acquainted with these two forms of SYP and they are very different !

I'm pretty sure its long leaf pine

The stumps and taproots of old trees become saturated with resin and will not rot. In old growth pine the heartwood of the bole is often saturated in the same way. When boards are cut from the fat lighter wood, they are very heavy and will not rot, but buildings constructed of them are quite flammable and make extremely hot fires.

That is from wikipedia and it pretty much sums up exactly the properties this pine I have has.
