Project Information
This is a king bed I have been working on for quite some time. The design is based off a bed I saw on Custombuilt's web site. I didnt have a plan or drawing, just sort of tried to figure out the demensions and proportions and the construction as I went. It was a challenging build in the size and scope of the project. I have a single car garage as a shop, so manuevering this thing around, and working with such long stock was always a challenge, as was the clamping and dry fitting. It has m&t construction. The rails are pegged through the back with walnut dowels. The pegs on the front are walnut, and just decorative. It is the first time I have used pegs like this, I think they turned out ok. With so many, there are just so many chances for error and imperfections. The posts are approximately 3 1/8" square. Laminated three 5/4 pieces of mahogany, and then veneered the glued edge to hide the lines and give the ribbon effect on all sides of the posts. The bed is approx 62" tall, 83" long and 80" wide. I ordered some support legs from a bed supplier to span the center in two locations, they have two legs each for a total of four additional legs. The hardware for the rails is a mortise type from Woodcraft, so it can come apart easily. It is finished with pure tung oil and several coats of lacquer. There were certainly mistakes and some learning opportunities along the way, but what project doesnt have those? Thanks for looking, and I am looking forward to making some small projects for a while. : )
