Project Information

This is a king bed I have been working on for quite some time. The design is based off a bed I saw on Custombuilt's web site. I didnt have a plan or drawing, just sort of tried to figure out the demensions and proportions and the construction as I went. It was a challenging build in the size and scope of the project. I have a single car garage as a shop, so manuevering this thing around, and working with such long stock was always a challenge, as was the clamping and dry fitting. It has m&t construction. The rails are pegged through the back with walnut dowels. The pegs on the front are walnut, and just decorative. It is the first time I have used pegs like this, I think they turned out ok. With so many, there are just so many chances for error and imperfections. The posts are approximately 3 1/8" square. Laminated three 5/4 pieces of mahogany, and then veneered the glued edge to hide the lines and give the ribbon effect on all sides of the posts. The bed is approx 62" tall, 83" long and 80" wide. I ordered some support legs from a bed supplier to span the center in two locations, they have two legs each for a total of four additional legs. The hardware for the rails is a mortise type from Woodcraft, so it can come apart easily. It is finished with pure tung oil and several coats of lacquer. There were certainly mistakes and some learning opportunities along the way, but what project doesnt have those? Thanks for looking, and I am looking forward to making some small projects for a while. : )

Maybe I missed it but what are the panels? Duh - read the title!

Which pegs are real and which are decorative?

Did you make the pegs?

I am confused. You laminated mahagony and the veneered over it?

Do you always sleep outside?

BTW, it looks absolutely friggin awesome. I might turn gay just so I could sleep in your bed.

Panels are solid, resawn figured maple, some pacific kind or another. I just thought the wood looked cool. I made all of the decorative pegs on the front, or visible areas. Used a HC mortise chisel and drill bit. On the back of the headboard and footboard I used dowels to pin the m&t joints. Not seen in the pics. Yes, I laminated solid mahogany with a 1/16" veneer. I didnt like the glue lined or the fact the ribboning didnt go around the post, didnt want to use an end cap either. I typically dont sleep outside, but it was too dang big to photograph indoors.

Now thats down right pretty. Shane good choice of wood and layout. The pins set it off nicely.
One thing dont you think you need to move it in the house before you use it?

That was a massive undertaking, and what a success!! Shane, that look is teriffic, with the contrasting materials and finishes, but raises a huge question: gonna made a dresser and night stand to match??

Well done, congrats!

Shane, very classy lines - I like it! Congrats on a fine job!

I'll need to make one for myself one day. My wife wants a four poster bed.
I wonder how long I can put that off?

Anyway, you did wonderful things there! You should be very proud.

Friggin' amazing Shane! It will give you a big smile every time you lay down to go to bed, I can picture you cuddled up with one hand rubbing the maple panels as you sleep. ;-) Congrats on a great accomplishment Shane!

I bed like that would easily cost you about $2k wouldn't you say? Probably more. I'd say you justified some tool purchases with that!

Hey Shane - that is a real beauty! No doubt you have some serious hours into this….. The Mahogany and Maple look great…. I like how you handled the posts and they turned out great - I agree you wouldn't want those glue lines showing…...

Now you've freed up so much space in your shop you may need to reward yourself with a new toy or maybe some wood??? :)

Nicely done….

Thanks for all the kind words. The bed that was the inspiration oiece was between $3-4k. His was made of QS Doug Fir w/veneered figured maple panels, ebony plugs. Seemed expensive at first, but now I think that is more than fair. I have quite a bit of $ invested in this one. It took months of buying wood a piece here a piece there, to get the tone, grain, and figure I wanted. Got lots extra to make other stuff with now. But the mahogany was setting me back about $8bf, which is way more than my normal CL honey hole prices. Thanks again, I am just glad it is done!
