Project Information

I've been a "LumberJock" for 522 days now. Occasionally I get a little grief for NOT posting any projects. There is a good reason for this social faux pas (read: poor excuse), nothing I completed has been worthy. I have finally completed something in my shop that consitutes a "Finished Project", so here it is. Now I don't feel this is truely worthy, but I needed to post something!

This is a sled/jig for my cheap@$$ B&D bandsaw (a $10.00 purchase). It is a single purpose, one time use jig. It is designed to slice corks (from wine bottles) into little 1/4" disks. I used all scrap materials, why waste quality materials on a single use jig. I used 3/4" pvc electric conduit, (cut in half) to hold the corks, then screwed that to the "sled/fence" that was then attached to the miter gauge. There is even a stop block to get accurate repeatability. This really is a simple jig from a simpleton!!!

"Safety Alert!! Although one must consume wine to use the corks, you should sober up before operating the BS with this jig!!!

Now, no one can give me anymore grief for not having posted a project.

Thanks for looking, sorry I wasted your time!!!

MitchMan,
You are a very fortunate person. You get to say that YOU were the first person to see MY first project. When I'm rich & famous, I promise not to forget you!!! Lol.

The cork disks will be used by a friend of mine to make mini bistro tables for doll houses. JK. Seriously though, my friend will use the disks for a bistro table top. He will cover the current table top with the disks, then encase them in an epoxy resin.

I can also see these disks being used for feet for cutting boards & trays.

Thanks for taking the time to look!

Eddie,
Thanks for stopping by & looking in.

I suppose (with a slight modification) it could be used for cutting dowels to length. I wood have made this more "multi-purpose", except that I was in a hurry to finish it.

Super,
I'm not sure how many disks my friend needs. He's making/covering a 3' diameter table top with the cork disks. I think his math may be off, he has been drinking a lot of wine recently and has enough corks for at least ten tables. Unless of course he wants to do a whole restaurants worth of tables!!!

Stumpy is free to improve upon this all he wants to. It's hard to improve upon perfection though!!!

Congratulations on the first project posting - truly a gala event! And good to post the safety advice, you just never know…...

I really like the idea of little cork feet for the cutting boards…....now just need to find a wine drinker to justify the jig…..

And spending some time in the basement on the hot day…..ain't so bad!

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the comments & riddicule!!! It makes me feel at home.

I was a little concerned a while ago, a thunderstorm blew through. I was afraid of being struck by lightning. I guess lightning only strikes me when I appear in church!!!

A finished product doesn't always have to be a masterpiece to anyone but you. I may post a few silly things but I feel I learn from the commentary I get. Helps me be a better woodworker I think. Don't be afraid to show us what you've got.

Monte,
Thanks for the encouraging & motivating words. I'm not neccesarily afraid to post a project, it's just that they are minor, totally utilitarian and not worth wasting anyones time. I also suffer from severe "Procrastination Syndrome" (I'm self diagnosed), and have not started, let alone completed anything worthy. Lol.

When I do a real project, rest assured I'll post it, regardless if it's a masterpiece or a piece of %#!@. I agree with you regarding the interaction and exchange of creative criticism.

Thanks for your time & thoughts.

Kindlingmaker,
Originally my friend wanted the corks cut in half lengthwise, as in your bulletin board, so I had a different sled/jig concept. I was always planning on the 3/4" conduit, I just needed to rotate it 90* and redesign the sled/jig.

I may need to revisit the original concept & steal your bulletin board idea. My buddy has MANY corks to find a use for.

Thanks for taking a peek at my project & the link to yours.

Hey Randy, the corks are out, so we can assume the genie has left the bottle, soon to be followed by stupendous creative projects, which we all know lurks within you.
Your jig design and execution is indeed a "corker" of an idea, even making sure the jig was used chilled was a master stroke and the idea of calling it a Brut Jig was pure genius.

Eddie,
You must be confused, because you're #1!!!

qiren,
Right back at ya!!! ??(I think)

Rex,
I am so glad you approve. I was worried about meeting you expectations. Ha haa haaaa! I just couldn't say that with a straight face!! Now don't raise the bar too high. I'm a short person & won't be able to reach my drink!

Thank you all for making me rich & famous. MitchMan, I haven't forgotten about you (yet)!!!
