Project Information

I made the top feature ring for the feature ring contest at segmentedwoodturners.org. I was blessed by the members with 1st place. I had actually made the ring as practice for large vessel I'm building. When it won though, I knew I had to complete the project. I also needed a piece to take with me to submit for the instant gallery at the AAW symposium. That's when I made the rest of the vessel. While I didn't win anything at the symposium, I did get to spend a lot of time with Malcolm Tibbetts and Bruce Campbell. Both are so very talented in every aspect of wood turning. It was just wonderful that they took time out of their busy event schedule to really share their knowledge with me. Anyway, this piece stands 12" tall, 8"wide, has 1902 pieces to be precise and is turned to 3/16 thick. The woods used are Tiger Maple & Tropical Walnut. Please enjoy.

Amazing layering! The patterns and colors remind me of the ancient pottery that came from the Hellenistic period in Greece. Definitely a classic.

Very beautiful segmented turning, unique feature ring, excellent workmanship and finish. It's hard to believe this didn't win something at the show. Truely outstanding work.

Several years ago I did an interview with Kevin Neally he is a pioneer of this art form as it is done today . while going through some of the old deltagrams I found early segmented turnings. It is amazing what can be done and I know Kevin has a program he sells that lets you work out the design before you turn anything. This wonderful piece is easily worth 2 thousand dollars or more and it is a piece I would love to own. I would like to get together with you and do a story on this build I will pm you to discuss this with you in a few days.

Stunningly beautiful, in every way! I have done enough turning and dabbled in segmented work enough to know how complex and challenging this beauty is to accomplish. Congratulations on a job extremely well done. Guess it takes a low to wow the AAW judges.
