Project Information

This is my first attempt to make a box. The process itself is simple enough. Mitre cuts, grooves for bottom, mitre keys. Still, I learned a lot from making it.

And the most important thing is, I really like it. I like how it looks and the satisfaction it brings me.

After this photo, It was finished with shellac.

It is a bit zen - I am relaxing just looking at the picture! What is the size? Do you have plans for its future? A nice, simple, well-executed design is a great compliment to the wood. Nicely done.

It's very small actually. About 5" long, 3" wide, 2 1/2" high.

Kay, if you are asking what am I going to do with the box, I have absolutely no idea. HA. For now, it is more like a process of building my woodworking skill.

Nice job! I did basiclly the same box a few years ago when i started. The lessons learned on a simple box are invaluable and will stay with you. Keep us posted on your future projects.

Ethan,

Great start. Time for a top and hinges. You might try designing your next box from the inside out. Decide what you want to keep in it and then make a box to do that job. Keep boxing and keep posting.

I gotta agree with Kookaburra, beautiful lines and very peaceful… even the greenery in the background adds to the effect. Looks like you're a photographer as well as a woodworker.

As far as I am concerned I think you aught to put this up on a shelf in a special place of honor to admire for years to come. You did a fantastic job on your first go at it…. I still have my first one sitting right by my night stand reminding me daily where I came from and how things evolved (and mine didn't look as nice as this…lol).

Good stuff!

Careful now, these are known as gateway drug projects. Next thing you know you'll be on to the hard stuff, Greene and Greene, Gustav Stickley etc. etc.
Fine work on your first go.

Big Al, The next one will definitely come with a lid. And you are totally right on the inside-out approach. Thanks a lot for the tips.

Adrian, I figured if I am not very good at woodworking, I might as well photo it better. Ha.

Thank you guys for the comments. They really are a big encouragement for me. LJs is indeed a nice place. Thank you all!
