Project Information

Story: I had this great piece of Paduk sapwood and the longer I looked at it, the more it looked like a beach scene. Walking out to the shop late one sleepless night there was a full moon. Then it came to me that I could make a moon on the top of the box that would serve as a handle and a stop.

Wood: I sized this sliding lid box to fit my Paduk scrap. So it wound up being about 15×6x7. The top is Paduk and Movingui. The sides are American Walnut with Movingui splines. Since they get a lot of touching, I finish my boxes with several coats of wipe on poly topped with a coating of Johnson's Paste Wax.

Techniques: I turned and polished the "moon" as a sort of mushroom shape letting the "stem" stay on the back and extend through a hole drilled into the top of the box beneath the top's thickness. I glued it on as the final step after the box was assembled and had a finish. The stem acts as a stop to keep the lid from sliding off when opened because it hits the side of the box on the inside. The moon acts as a handle to open the box saving wear on the more fragile end. 45ing the end means that as you close the sliding lid it fits tight and leaves no crack because the needed slack for sliding is centered.

Critique: The three dimensional look of the top is functional and decorative. The grain and color of the movingui makes a great moon. The box is a little longer than good proportions would dictate, but I didn't want to cut the top board. I like the way the rounded walnut sides frame the top.

As always, thanks for looking and a special thanks for commenting.

That piece of Padauk has found its perfect final resting place. It's why you couldn't sleep.
That's also a nice new inventive take on a handle for this type of box with the added luster of our ever present dreamer in the sky. It's one of my favourite details on one of my own projects.
I think the length is just fine but would perhaps have made the box ever so slightly less tall. Just my own personal preference.
A very fine build with the warmth of the walnut rounding it off nicely.

I don't think there could be a negative critique that would hold any weight here. It's a sweet, tight lil box.

Cool design with some beautiful woods. When I first saw it I thought you had 'trapped' a turned ball in the lid so that it could spin. Maybe next time.

Nice effect. The moon looks like a big water droplet magnifying the grain underneath. Well done

don't know what the heck "movingui" wood is; but it looks nice.
great box design, the moon does look like a water droplet.

Door Dude,

This movingui tree grew on a sunny hillside in Ghana, Africa. I got it as left over backer boards after they had turned the rest of the log into figured veneer. I let it air dry for two years and now I can use it as great material for boxes.

this is much more elegant than my sliding box. Do you have any posts of the jig you use for your miter keys? Beautiful work!

I like that the edge is left on the slide lid. Looks great. I really enjoy how you gave details about this project in your post as well. I feel a dominoes box like this is in my woodworking future! Thanks, Drew
