Project Information

My most recent build was a cherry cabinet for spices. The boss (Wife) told me that she was tired of different size spice containers from the grocery store and that she hated them on the lazy susan in the cabinet because they constantly fall off and became over crowded. I quickly thought I would just build a small wall cabinet that would match our existing cabinets but I didn't have any plywood on hand so I ran to the wood supply (My beloved wood closet in my house.) I had some nice curly maple, walnut, and cherry. I chose the cherry because we have cherry countertops in our kitchen and thought it would be a nice touch. You know it is easy to take a total utilitarian project and go off on a binge of dovetails and decorative (and functional) pegs. So I dovetailed the case, then built the face frame and decided it need a little flare so I added a bead. Then made the door and decided that the half lap joints should be reinforced so I did walnut pegs. After that I decided that a plank shelf just wasn't going to cut it so I did breadboards and pegged them as well with the same walnut pegs. I just kept finding myself asking "why not?" and I just kept adding a little flare here and there. This cabinet has been hanging on my wall since Sunday afternoon and I just feel like it needs something more…..Maybe a top? "why not?"

Cabinet is about 22 inches tall by 12 inches wide and about 3 inches deep.

From the first photo, I initially thought the the cabinet was recessed into the wall between two studs-it's about the right size! I especially like the beading and walnut pegs. Nice work!

The way I see it is, if you're gonna have to look at it every day, you might as well make it look nice.

Aldente, I too love to cook and have in the last year tried to simplify my seasonings and allow techniques to improve my food vs. enhancing them with spices. This has allowed me to consolidate and minimize the spice supply and cost, although, I wouldn't mind having a couple more of these.

DaddyT, you can get them at a couple of places. Beware of shipping fees…they seem to fluctuate.

That is a fine looking cabinet. Those square bottles do the trick. Thank you for sharing.
