Hey guys, I was told the name by an older carpenter. I'm guessing it gets the name from it's appearance. It's used for when we do cedar siding. We fit one end of the siding and run the other end long. Then we use the dog bone on the long end, butted against the corner board with the siding in the notched part to mark it for length. I use a sharp knife along the outside of the notch to mark the cut and a hand saw to cut the siding to length. This way the cut fits perfect to the corner boards every time.

Super simple, yet amazingly useful for that job. I love tools like that! I'm not going to run to make one, as I have no use for it. I will keep it in mind though, that basic idea has to have other uses. One of those things that I'll forget about until I'm trying to do something else.
