An interesting proposition

A good friend of mine and local Accordion player of note, Tom Pearce, has ask me to collaborate on the refurb/ upgrading of an old instrument

Circuit component Hardware programmer Computer hardware Rectangle Passive circuit component

He's done the initial separation of the parts

Brown Wood Rectangle Wood stain Metal

He has asked if I can make a new carcass for it. This could be expensive and time consuming in solid wood (the first idea) but looking at it the plywood body is in good condition with some work needed on the plastic coating (green bit). Tommy is after a natural wood finish instead so I'm suggesting veneering the old carcass. I might even be able to get him interested in some veneer patterns (what do you think, Tommy?).

First job though is to block off both ends of the bellows section

Wood Rectangle Automotive exterior Vehicle Hardwood

and build a carrier for single reads to enable him to clean and re-tune them. I'm excited about this, more to follow

Be seeing you.

Btw, I'm just doing the wood related bits on this, Tommy is the musical expert.

Wow! Nice project. I'm anxious to see how it goes, especially the exterior veneer idea. Have an ol' squeezbox here and may want to consider doing it….depending on what you run into…lol.

Martyn, how about some marquetry for those new veneer panels?

Used to play the squeeze box as a kid, and even made some money with it in high school playing at weddings. I remember one day when a European friend said, "I hear that you play the accordion, would you like to try mine?" He then handed me one just like your friend's, only here in the States we have keys on the right side while in Europe that have buttons!! I just stared back :)

The accordion reads "Galotta". Drop one T and replace it with another O…

OK, this is a random project. Cool.
Sounds like a nice challenge. I'm making popcorn and watching this one.

My Mom's cousin was Myron Floren, Laurence Welk's accordion player. Just thought I would throw that out there.

I've been around my fair share of accordians and accordian players…I played clarinet and saxophone in a polka band for over 10 years while in high school and college. In the US we call that type of an accordian a button box. I'm watching with interest Martyn.

Fascinating. I'm sure it will turn out great. A while back I looked in to helping a friend and came across a cool tuning fixture shown in this video. I was as fascinated with the jig as with the accordian.

Martin, I expect more from you on the choice of veneer and the design. So many things in my mind… how will you clamp those veneers?.... What kind of glue can withstand the movements? Well what a nice start of 2012 Martin's variations. I will follow this. Happy New Year.

Some bad news

Well I'd done some work stripping down the box to make re-covering it a little easier

Go Wood Rectangle Gas Recreation

and started planning which new pieces we'd need

Bumper Wood Rectangle Font Computer keyboard

this key board cover to be copied in veneered 3mm Birch ply.

I have made a TurboCAD 3D model of the Accordion

Rectangle Gas Font Cylinder Drawing

to help with visualising different wood veneer/ banding finishes. I don't use Sketchup, I've nothing against it, having thoroughly learnt one CAD package I don't see why I should have to start from scratch again.

Anyway today, Tommy announced that, as he has a new baby about to be born, he unfortunately has to cancel the project. I was looking forward to this one. Veneering on curves, other new things but family comes first. Good luck Tommy, Lindsay and the new baby..

Oh well. I've got plenty of other things to get on with.

Be seeing you
