Metallurgy Primer - 4 replies

I happened to stumble across this very concise and well written primer on different types of steel (o1, a2, various others). It focuses a little more on knives rather than other tools, but it still covers a lot of helpful stuff. Hope you find it as helpful as I did. https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en%E1%B0%9Dc4b6b0d3316f#!topic/rec.knives...

Help in identifying lumber -- dense and knotty - 27 replies

Hey all, need some help identifying this lumber. It is pretty dense, at least equivalent to hard maple. The board on the bottom has some grain that looks like ash but the flip side looks like the other boards. Coarse grained, about on the level of oak. Thanks!

Gripper 200 with 1/8" attachment SOLD - 2 replies

Hey LJs, I am a beginning woodworker in my 20s who has a pretty strict tool budget. I bought a Gripper 200 (http://goo.gl/CHQxqM) and the 1/8” optional sidepiece (http://goo.gl/AhftfG) a couple months ago when I got my first table saw because I really thought it would be helpful/more safe. choosing the right sized chisel for a mortise - 7 replies

Okay, this may seem like a silly question, but I am working on my first piece of furniture that utilizes mortise and tenon joinery. Let’s say you are making 1” square mortises and started by drilling out the material to the proper depth. In order to clean up the remaining material, would you use a 1” chisel or a smaller chisel,...

Cherry vs ??? - 12 replies

I am trying to identify the piece of lumber in the bottom of this picture. For comparison, the piece in the top of the picture is naturally aged cherry. The lower piece is a fair amount heavier and obviously about the same size. I am still pretty new at this, so I appreciate the help.

So who are the sawblade experts here? Please help in identifying a used blade. - 11 replies

Hi all, I inherited some tools from my wife’s grandfather. He was not a man to shy away from buying expensive equipment. Anyways, one of things I got was a miter saw with this blade in it. At first I thought it could be a Woodworker II, but alas, the expansion slots/stress relievers are not the same (at least as the new ones sold on For...
