Trouble coloring plywood - 25 replies

Making a floor cabinet with white oakand used 1/4 inch ply from a hardwood dealer on the sides and back. As you can see the strips of veneer came out different hues and looks striped. Not what I wanted. I actually had to look very closely to see where the jpints were before i stained it, so this was bery unexpected. Should I have been able t...

spraying varnish - 19 replies

To make a little money to help buy new woodworking equipment, I build and sell farmhouse tables. I’ve recently upgraded my product to hardwood and wanted to start spaying varnish as the finish instead of lacquer. I’m using Behlens Rock Hard Tabletop varnish. I began with two coats of shellac as a sealer. I thinned down the first coat...

trouble with lacquer finish - 7 replies

I’m putting a lacquer finish on a hostess table I built for a local restaurant. The first two coats went on great, smooth and clear. the third coat, however, had a little cloudiness in a few small areas. I sanded a little heavier in those areas that seemed to remove most of it and applied a forth coat, that came out much cloudier. Since it...

Grizzly or Powermatic jointer? - 11 replies

I will soon be making my largest ever woodworking equipment purchase. I have the opportunity to get a new Powermatic 8” parallelogram jointer (2hp) for about 2000. including tax. I also know the Grizzly 8” parallelogram jointer (3hp, spiral cutterhead) is about 1500. It will be used in a growing woodworking business. Both are good br...

Brush marks in urethane finish - 9 replies

I’m finishing up a farmhouse table for a client. She saw a previous table I did that I had used satin varnish on but wanted hers even less glossy than the satin so I chose some Minwax Pro Series Spar Urethane. I had used it on another project and knew it had a lot less sheen. My problem is I can’t get away from the brush marks where ...

lacquer purchasing options - 14 replies

I recently purchased an Earlex sprayer that I use to apply lacquer to finish my projects. The only lacquer I have been able to find are quarts of Behlen’s Qualalac, which works great, but they only come in quarts that I have been able to find. Just wondering where other woodworkers get their lacquer and if you can get it in larger containers.

how tight do i clamp? - 16 replies

If you look at any of my projects you will see that furniture is new to me. I decided to try and make a little money with my woodworking by building some farmhouse tables. The first came out great, but the second table top “cupped” during glue up. I used 2×6’s for the table top. to try and keep them even during glue up I u...

Shellac as a sanding sealer - 10 replies

Just finished putting the last coat of Danish oil on 3 mohagany benches, and was wondering if shellac makes a good sanding sealer. I will be finishing with lacquer. I’ve heard that shellac can be used with just about any finish, but wasn’t sure how effective it was as a sealer. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Dining room set striped and ready, but... - 2 replies

A friend recently asked me to refinish a dining room set for her. I wanted the experience in finishing so I agreed. After striping the chairs and table (about 18 hours of work. It was finish, over paint,, over finish, over stain), she decided to wait until next spring to color and finish. She has had some family health issues and was going to re...

Unimat DB200 - 9 replies

Sorry if I’m posting in the wrong forum. Just figured there was a better chance of reaching the right people here than in the power tools forum. My son is working at a scrap yard right now and grabbed this when it came in and thought I might like it. Its a Unimat DB200. Not sure of the year, but I think early 1950’s? I haven...

Dimples in varnish - 7 replies

I am refinishing an oak table for a friend. It has been stained and given a few coats of Watco oil. I let the last coat of oil dry about 7-8 days before starting the varnish. Each coat has left “dimples”, areas where I have observed the smooth varnish pull away and form a dimple. There are no dimples where the grain is nice and tight...

help with identifying wood - 26 replies

A good friend of mine passed away a little over a year ago. We had always talked about refinishing his dining room set. I decided to go ahead and do it for his wife. The table is red oak, this I’m sure of. But when I sanded down two of the chairs they are something different. The wood is softer than oak, sands easily, and the grain is very...

What does this mean? - 7 replies

When my alarm goes off in the morning, I hit the snooze not to sleep, but to figure out how long I’ll be able to work in the shop that day. When I’m at work I wonder if I’ll have enough time to “finish the finish” on the project I’ve been working on. I check the Lumberjocks web site on lunch. I don’t thi...

How should you finish "old" wood - 8 replies

I have a friend who asked me how to refinish a small bookcase he has made out of 1×12’s pulled from an old house his grandfather(?) lived in. He wants to keep the rustic look of the wood, its grayish in color and a little rough to the touch. My experience with finishes is very limited so I was hoping for some help from you guys and ga...

Stain or Dye, what's your preference? - 9 replies

I’ve been playing around with stains and dyes, trying to figure out which I liked better, then it dawned on me – why not ask the pros? what do you prefer, and why? what are some of the draw backs? do you prefer oil based, water based, gel or liquid? Thanks for your opinions!

dye and finish before glue up - 3 replies

I’m a novice woodworker in need of some advice. I’m building a lamp with several small pieces that, when put together, the grain will run in different directions and there will be many small crevices. I am going to color the wood with a water based dye and then finish with several coats of Watco oil and spray laquer. Can I do any of ...
