Building lathes #1: New bowl lathe

Recently I converted an abandoned K&T horizontal mill into a bowl lathe. The machine has an enormous shaft supported by 3 roller bearings. The front one is gigantic to resist high impact coming from metal cutting. After removing all the gears and power transmission mechanisms inside, I installed a pulley on the shaft and 3 hp-3 ph baldor motor, and VFD. The special feature of the lathe is that the bed (actually knee of the mill) moves vertically. When lowered maximally, you can turn 50 inch wide pieces. Therefore I named the lathe DK-50 (DK stands for David Koh, my name). When raised to the top limit, a 12-inch lathe can be installed on the bed ...
