Stopping the checking - 5 replies

I wanted to know what I could do to stop the checking in this piece of walnut? I’ve gotten the bandsaw box bug and picked this piece up from the offcut pile to make a small box with. My original thinking was to sandwich the piece between two pieces of maple and then put some maple dust mixed with CA glue into the check for a combo desig...

Another guess the wood game - a 2 for 1 - 13 replies

Neighbor was throwing this wood away and it looked like poplar to me. And I thought this was oak, but it didn’t check as bad as I was expecting, so now I’m not sure.

Questions about the pith - 13 replies

I’ve read about the pith and how you should avoid it. But what about all those large slabs? Do none of them have the pith in them? Can the pith still be included in boards used? I recently had a bunch of cherry chunks sliced up and a few panels are almost ready to start building with. Do I need to cut around the pith on those as well...

Painting some plywood shelves - 8 replies

Looking for some advice on paint for some shelves for a closet. Wife wants to paint them white. I trimmed them out with pine, so don’t have to worry about the edges. Wondering if I can just use the leftover paint from the baseboards? Thanks for any advice.

Picked up a used Delta 40-680 - 2 replies

It’s a P20 and I got it for pretty cheap. The blade was broken, so I picked up a 5 pack from Lowes. But they came with these little tabs on the end. So I’m guessing they weren’t the proper ones for my machine. I was able to pull them out and got the blade installed. I was impressed that it ran so smoothly. I need to ma...

Dual Bandsaw setup ? - 11 replies

I’m debating on whether to keep my two bandsaws or get rid of one. Have a 14” Rikon deluxe that I bought new and I just recently picked up a used PWBS-14CS 14” for cheap. If I sold one, it would obviously be the PM. But I got the PM for such a cheap price, it seems to be a shame just to sell it knowing I’d have a h...

New Hardwood option for Northern Virginia area. Provenance Hardwoods - 7 replies

I recently found another option for purchasing hardwood in the area. Located off Rt 50 just west of Middleburg, is a new start up operation. Guy who runs it, Matt, was a real pleasure to deal with. I called him asking about getting some cherry chunks cut up on his bandsaw mill. He’s normally out there Mon-Fri, but will also meet you by...

Spur center keeps getting stuck in the headstock - 12 replies

Is there a trick to avoiding my spur center from getting stuck in the headstock? Should I coat it with anti-seize before putting it in? It’ll get stuck in there and then I have to use channel locks to twist it free. I’ve wrapped the spur center with a rag, but it’s still getting a little beat up from the jaws of the wrench.

Have some questions about building a wet bar - 7 replies

So after getting my basement finished, we have a small area where we want to put a wet bar. Here is a layout online that I like, but had a few questions on which way to construct the base cabinets. The area for the wet bar is 74” wide x 16.25” deep x 85.75” tall and is already tiled. First, do I really need a beve...

I need some mobile bases - 31 replies

I’ve looked back through a bunch of posts on mobile bases and found some good info, but I’m wanting to get some fresh perspectives on them. I need a couple mobile bases and I’m wondering if it’s worth building some or just get a commercial one? Obviously, it’s not the hardest to cut a piece of plywood and put ...

Just got a lathe, where to put it? - 20 replies

I just got a Jet JWL-1236 lathe and I’m trying to get a feel for where I should set it up. I’m working out of half of a 2 car garage, so space is at an extremely high premium. I am half tempted to put it in the basement where I have a little bit of space, since it’s not necessarily a critical tool for building projects. ...

Air cleaner placement - 3 replies

Just got a wen air cleaner for the garage and I’m trying to figure out where to place it. I only have two circuits to the garage and while I know it’s not an ideal location, this spot allows me to plug it in on a different circuit from the one my power tools will be on. Originally I had the filter facing out with the clean air...

Bandsaw mill near Northern Va - 3 replies

Interested to see if anyone might know of a bandsaw mill within the DC Metro area? I have some logs I wouldn’t mind taking somewhere to get cut up.

What makes something an heirloom? - 18 replies

As most woodworkers, I’m interested in creating something that I could give to my kids that they would hopefully keep for themselves through their lives and possibly pass down to their kids. So I’m just curious to hear what others have made that fit this bill? And also, what makes a piece of furniture an heirloom? Joinery, mater...

I just spent my lunch break dragging a tree out of the woods - 23 replies

Driving to work, I noticed a nice cedar tree had been cut up into manageable pieces along the side of the road. Well, some were a lot more manageable than others. ha So I got the idea that I’d go at lunch time and grab the pieces. With no way to park near the logs, I had to basically carry those logs quite a ways back to my truck. ...

Dust Masks - 32 replies

Looking for any recommendations on a good set up. I’m still all stuffed up from working this past saturday in my garage and it’s making me sick thinking about how much fine dust I inhaled. An air cleaner is on the list of things to get, but in the meantime I want to get a dust mask. Seems most go with the 3M 7500, but I see a fe...

Delta 15-270 DP - 4 replies

Doesn’t seem to be much info out there on this model. I took a chance and won one at an auction and going to pick it up on Monday. Anyone have any info on it? Looks like the belt cover is missing and I’m hoping that pulley just needs a set screw. It supposedly has 6” of travel.

Another what kind of wood is it? - 19 replies

Found it in the woods here in Northern Va. I’m fairly confident it isn’t alder. I sliced a few boards out of a piece and was just wondering what kind of wood it was.

Anyone with any newer feedback on these? And when did they switch colors from green to blue? Might be looking at a used one and wondering if there’s anything to look for in particular.

JET 708457K JJ-6CSX Jointer - 36 replies

As I want to start getting more serious about wood working, I’ve been searching CL and other sites for used equipment. However, I have to admit I’m not 100% confident yet to know whether anything is a good deal or not. I came across this ad for a 6” Jet jointer and wanted to see if it was a good deal or if it was high. I&#...
