Molding Plane Design Questions - 3 replies

Does anybody know why molding planes have a off center irons as opposed to a center blade? I would certainly think for construction sake it would be easier to use a centered iron and then taper both sides of the plane body as opposed to using an offcenter blade and tapering only one side of the plane. How do butt locking bevel gauges work? - 2 replies

Does anyone know how the butt locking thumbscrew mechanism works for bevel gauges? Or can somebody give me a link to diagrams/explanations. I’ve been wanting to make one for myself, but I don’t want to have to reinvent the wheel so to speak. I can’t seem to find anything online.

Tool Steels - 3 replies

I have been looking into making my own hand tools, and I wanted to know if anybody knew of a good steel supplier. I don’t want large quantities, but I want to find both oil and water quenching tool steel along with steel for saw blades. Any and all suggestions are welcome.
