Yarn Spinner

11-29-2012 07:46 PM by Ampeater | 1 comment »

Yarn SpinnerThis project started after I saw a post from PapaS concerning his Yarn Caddie. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/61843I decided to make a couple for my wife with a slightly different design. This picture shows the final result. The main purpose of the spinner is to allow the skein of yarn to spool off of the spinner as the Knitter works on her project. It also eliminates the need to wind the entire skein of yarn into a ball to make it easier to control. I found that the most d...

Lathes and Turning #2: My first finished project!

06-01-2011 11:57 AM by swamps42 | 6 comments »

I’ve been trying very hard to create a honey dipper, but since I don’t have an appropriate parting tool, it’s next to impossible. I have gotten very good at turning a square 2″x2″ bit of super cheap construction lumber into 10″ long dowels that are about 2″ diameter. I’m also very good at making saw dust. I’m glad that my last rainy day terror didn’t dissuade me from my efforts. Thanks everyone for the upbeat words and encouragement… it actually made a big difference when I got out there again. This weekend I went to Rockler and saw this great deal on Bocote turning blanks. Picked up three 1×1x12 for $1/pc. BTW… has anyone else noticed that Bocote smells like pickles when worked?! WEIRD! After turning two spindles, I decided that I was absolutely in love with th...

Shrooms #1: Discouraging Day

10-15-2009 12:06 AM by Lisa Chan | 10 comments »

The weather has turned in my area of the US and my landlord has not prepped the property for the deluge we usually get. I spent an hour this afternoon figuring out an alternative water flow for runoff that was coming into our garage and threatening to flood us out. But that wasn’t the first of it. When I initially went into the garage it turned out that the power is busted too. I ended up running an extension from my apartment in order to power the garage door and all my tools. This ...
