An adventure in making toys - Old Time Farm Truck #1: Intro

03-02-2015 07:37 PM by George_SA | 5 comments »

Edit 8 June 2015 Finished truck can be seen over here One of my preferences in woodworking is wooden toys. I have a special interest in trucks and the model of the Old Time Farm Truck by Ron Fritz, Creeksidewoodshop.com on the Google Sketchup 3D warehouse drew my attention. His model was in imperial dimensions and since I work in metric I redrew the truck in Sketchup with metric dimensions and also simplified it somewhat . You can convert imperial to mm in sketchup and the other way ro...

An adventure in making toys - Old Time Farm Truck #9: Headlamps and mudguards

05-27-2015 12:15 PM by George_SA | 7 comments »

I used the end of a broomstick for the two headlamps. I didn’t have a 20 mm dowel and I did not want to fire up the lathe to turn a such a short 20mm spindle and also the broomstick was just the right diameter and it was only a very short piece that was needed. The headlamps will be attached to the engine block with dowels. I also used two washers and attached them with screws to make the headlamps a bit more interesting With the mudguards I reverted back to my original plan. ...

An adventure in making toys - Old Time Farm Truck #5: Engine Block

03-16-2015 08:11 PM by George_SA | 2 comments »

I had a piece of white oak which I salvaged out of someone’s fire bin. It had a crack in, but by cutting and laminating I managed to get the crack invisible on the outside. The sanding guidelines after cutting the block to size. After sanding to shape on the disk sander The engine block and radiator ready to be joined. On this photo the crack that I mentioned above is clearly visible. After the radiator is fitted however, it will not be visible anymore. Radiator and engi...

Toy Construction #57: Tanker Truck #1

06-03-2016 12:11 AM by htl | 14 comments »

Started playing with the plans for the tanker truck.T&J has two tanker trucks, this one was put out in 1985 if I remember right and is a very simple plan with 2 pages to work with. The newer one is much more elaborate having tool boxes and oil drums on the sides. It had fenders going to the tool boxes and stopping. The one I have has full fenders but no tool boxes and the tank is rounder. I’m going to be copying the squarer looking tank but still not sure about the tools boxes y...

Here’s the Project Post Tried blacking out the fenders and it turned out ok, walnut is a much blacker wood when stained but the oaks wood grain peeking through looks pretty good. but won’t be doing it again I think. The danish oil should look good.

Toy Construction #123: Delivery Truck Grill & interier

11-29-2016 12:15 AM by htl | 8 comments »

The pictures on the plans for the front of the truck just don’t seem to make much sense to me but I ended up getting something done on it. It really doesn’t look like I got much done but the front end and grill were a pain to figure out so just went my own way and got er done. Had some fun working on the seats and steering wheel.I got to remember to put in a shifter before I glue up the top.The steering wheel was supposed to look like one with finger grips but looks...

A Dump Truck Adventure #1: Humble beginnings

01-03-2018 07:20 PM by George_SA | 4 comments »

It is time for another truck making adventure. The little guy who received this Old Time Farm Truck for his 1st birthday has a little brother who is now also nearing his 1st birthday. As usual I asked professor Google and his assistants YouTube and Pinterest for some ideas and from those Ideas I decided on a dump truck. First I needed a plan and SketchUp proved to be handy again. I drew the plans (available over her) As usual I start with the chassis. Although I prefer my Small ...
