Playing Around with Carving #4: Carving Class

06-27-2011 04:33 AM by WayneC | 22 comments »

Today I took an introduction to relief carving class at the local Woodcraft store. The class was focused on carving an oak leaf and acorns using a piece of Basswood. This was my first experience at relief carving. I am an absolute beginner. I have to say I really enjoyed this and will be setting time aside to carve as much as I can. I would also say I have extreamly happy with the Ashley Iles carving chisels. They arrived sharp, are very substantal and they cut basswood like a hot kn...

Ok, I am from New Orleans and we do not have anything like a Woodcraft store in my entire state. My wife and I were on vacation in San Antonio this week and just a couple of miles outside the city was a Woodcraft store. We had some time to kill one morning and headed over there. Now, I am pretty new to wood working and very much an amateur, but when I walked in that place I wanted to kiss the floor. I get the Woodcraft catalogue every month, but being there in person is just so much better. ...

Veneering #1: A Primer Course

07-12-2007 06:35 AM by Lee A. Jesberger | 19 comments »

Veneering, a Primer Course The top photo is a couple sample packs of sequenced matched veneers from Woodcraft supply. The secong photo is bookmatched Camphor veneer. The third photo is Bruce holding a sample of Avodire Crotch veneer, with No Finish on it. Some of you may have noticed my slight addiction to working with veneers. When you start to investigate the available veneers on the market, it becomes very difficult for me to understand the resistance to it that some people have....

Woodcraft Magazine Photo Shoot

05-12-2009 12:13 AM by Patrick Jaromin | 16 comments »

What a blast!Last Friday, Woodcraft Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jim Harrold spent the day visiting my workshop to supervise a photo shoot of the shop for an upcoming issue. With him was Chicago-area photographer Mike Crews, his assistant John, and numerous road boxes filled with some pretty slick photography gear. A Dust-free Dust Collection System The process actually began the day before the shoot. Thursday afternoon, Jim stopped by, followed shortly by Mike. After introductions, they su...

My Woodcraft experience

05-28-2010 06:46 AM by ackychris | 14 comments »

I was just thinking that it’s pretty easy to slam a company when they screw up, but when they get it right it often goes unmentioned. Woodcraft, here’s to you. In case you don’t get to the end of this post, the moral of the story is that Woodcraft (online, not local) totally came through for me. I’ve ordered a few things from Woodcraft, and never had a problem. There aren’t any woodworking stores within two hours of where I live (unless you count the BORG&#...

Support you local woodworking shops, or lose them

03-22-2014 02:17 PM by Steve Diogo | 13 comments »

The Woodcraft store in Libertyville, IL, closed its doors for good on March 19. Over the previous two weeks, I had received emails from the store announcing huge discounts… 30% off everything, then 50, then 75. While no closing was announced, it was pretty obvious what was coming. Part of me wanted to make the hour drive and load up my car with half-price lumber and grab whatever tools were left. Part of me felt awful at the thought of picking the bones of a store I didn’t supp...

Crazy Stuff Stumpy Thinks About #33: Look out evil- there's a guy running around with a measuring tape!

02-07-2013 06:45 PM by StumpyNubs | 12 comments »

Woodworkers get inspiration from the most unlikely of sources. Recently I was eating a sandwich when it hit me: I’ve been getting ripped off! Maybe I should give you a little background on this… A couple of weeks ago I read a news story about a guy who was suing Subway restaurants because his “foot long” sub wasn’t a full twelve inches. Apparently he felt a little empty inside after consuming his cold cut combo. So he went around town ordering from every Subway he could find and measuring...

Dreaming of Festools

09-25-2007 03:24 PM by Bill | 10 comments »

Ok, so I am doing my normal perusing of woodworking tools, and I find that Woodcraft is having a Festool give away. Then I get to day dreaming, imagining what I could make with a MFT, or a TS55EQ circular saw, or even a plunge router. Then I realize I better enter before the contest is over. For the Festoolians out there, here is the link to the Festool giveaway. I am still watching The Woodwhisperer for the next Festool giveaway there as well. Imagine, a shop full of Festools. O...

Woodcraft's New WoodRiver V3 #4 Smoothing Plane Reveal video

11-24-2010 12:57 AM by MyGrowthRings | 9 comments »

I’m calling this a reveal rather than a review, because quite frankly I’m not the guy you want reviewing hand planes. You see, I’m a power tool guy, but as I mention in the video, I’m starting to fall back in love with hand tools. In recent months I’ve been researching planes and while there are some incredible planes available from Lie-Nielsen and Lee Valley, I just couldn’t bring myself to part with that much of my hard earned cash. Enter the new Woodc...
