Getting my tools ready #26: Maple, Murphy, and Me,

11-12-2017 01:19 AM by DocSavage45 | 22 comments »

Murphy always has a treat in store for me. My friend CharlieK (on LJ’s) lives in MN/St.Paul area. A town called Fridley. He had purchased a trailer load of rough milled hard maple and he had a lot left over which he was wanting to sell to get it out of his garage Took my 1990 3/4 ton truck and traveled 124 miles to have lunch and pick up some maple. Had a full truck bed up to the top of the sides of maple and I was returning home in the dark. About 11 miles from home my fro...

Virtual Designs in Sketchup #5: Rolling Wood Storage Rack

06-06-2011 07:22 PM by rance | 12 comments »

I’ve seen several variations of these rolling wood storage units. Inspired by them, I came up with this one for a friend of mine: It incorporates storage for long lumber, sheet goods, and small turning blocks as well. About the only thing I might add would be dowel storage of some kind. Truth be told, I’d probably just put them in tubes and store them on one of the shelves. It is a typical A-Frame design with half lapped joints. For economy, most of the stick material is...

Virtual Designs in Sketchup #9: Question on Wood Rack Installation

08-29-2011 03:48 AM by rance | 5 comments »

I’m installing a wood rack I built and would appreciate any input as to mounting. This is going in a dingy basement. In fact, it is going in the only room remaining that still has a dirt floor. The rack has been built and consists of 4 vertical supports as follows: The room where it is going looks something like this: The rack will be mounted on the right-hand wall like this: The vertical pieces will be supported by a simple 2×4 lying flat on the floor. Vertica...

Workshop #24: ShopQuest 2014- Wood Rack Revisited

02-09-2014 04:45 PM by clieb91 | 5 comments »

So as I mentioned in my earlier blogs for this year’s ShopQuest I wanted to get rid of my wood rack. I decided that was going to take a major effort and instead to do a little better allocation of space on it and see how it works this year. I spent a weekend cleaning it up and finding space for some of the wood and getting rid of some of it as well. I am not a fan of throwing out wood but some of it just was not going to be useful at all. I narrowed it down a little further and used pie...

Workshop #17: ShopQuest 2012- Lost a week

02-16-2012 09:14 PM by clieb91 | 2 comments »

Well due to the fact that I somehow managed to pull my back out at work last week I did not get a lot done in the shop. Could barely make it down the steps most of the week. It is feeling better now and I decided to use some spare time to finish the rearranging in the shop. I managed to get some excess wood thrown out during the last two trash days and found a place for most of the rest of the wood that I had piled up in the alcove. Found my old scrap bin I had built a few years ago at...
