On The Lathe #1: Bummer!! or My first Celtic knot

03-14-2012 04:11 PM by clieb91 | 6 comments »

So a few weeks ago I took a course on building segmented pens at my local Woodcraft. The class was very good and we came away with 4 different types; Celtic Knot, Spiderweb, Spiral Staircase, and a small piece of a Herringbone (which I am not sure I will be doing again) The Celtic knot is really the only one that was a complete blank and I decided to give it a try this morning before I started in on the other pens I am planning to turn this afternoon and through the weekend. Unfortunately it ...

Prototypes #6: Is that your natural color?

10-05-2009 05:03 AM by darryl | 5 comments »

well here it is, my first attempt at a dye job. As you can see, the dying process mostly worked, but not 100%. I’m not really sure I like the color selection anyway, but it would have been better if each piece of dyed maple had dyed completely. I wonder now if using a pressure pot is the only way to ensure that each piece gets 100% color saturation… time and testing will tell I suppose. here’s a detail shot of the piece. Any feedback, suggestions & insights woul...

Segmented Stave Bowl #1: Day One

01-07-2013 09:50 PM by TheDane | 2 comments »

Technically, what I am working on here is a ‘Stave Bowl’ ... a bowl comprised of vertical staves (like a barrel) glued together before turning. This particular bowl will turn out to be about 7 1/2” in diameter and 2 3/4” tall. The bottom and vertical spacers are walnut, and the staves are maple. I used a software package ( WOODTurnerPro … http://woodturnerpro.com ) to calculate the cutting angles and dimensions for the staves and segments. I cut the staves ...

50 for 50 - turning 50 as I turn 50 #3: Project 1 - new lathe, old design

01-07-2019 07:16 PM by mnguy | 2 comments »

I began turning almost 4 years ago, and like many people, I find it a bit addicting. I am not at the lathe every day by any means, and I have gone weeks without turning it on. But, I am often thinking about turning, sketching forms to turn, planning segmented projects, looking at lathes and tools. For 2019, I want to get deeper into turning, and to help, I have set the goal of turning 50 project this year. They won’t all be big or elaborate, some might even be failures, but I intend to ...

Wedgie Sled

08-29-2016 11:56 PM by Lee | 2 comments »

I had to make a segmented ring for a clock im making and decided to try the wedgie sled, i’ll have to say its the simplest thing to make, but its absolutely incredible, Jerry, your a freking genius. On my very first test the pieces came out absolutely perfect. Now I can get the walnut and maple out and make the final ring. Finally got some pics uploaded, I had a piece of adjustable miter bar left over from another project so I cut a shallow dado to lock it in, and (borrowed a 30deg t...

50 for 50 - turning 50 as I turn 50 #14: Lamp base

04-15-2019 03:47 PM by mnguy | 0 comments »

Segmented cherry lamp base as part of a larger project (posted separately as a project to talk about the shade). It was nice to not have to hollow this thing and to concentrate on the exterior form and finish. The project went well overall. I did a segmented top, and the true center was difficult to locate and the hole for the pipe / conduit ended up a bit off-center. I really needed a cone live center, as my small cup + point center didn’t center well in the hole. I now have a cone ...
