Guarino Videos #2: Sydney Mirror

08-11-2015 08:47 PM by GlenGuarino | 0 comments »

I am working on this for a gift for our granddaughter. The design may change a bit. I want the design to have gentle curves that will create dramatic shadows to provide interest as your eye moves around the mirror. In the second video I am working on the top part of the mirror. I’m tossing around ideas in my head of which wood to use, maybe some of the rescued mahogany, shedua or walnut. Sydney Part 1 https://youtu.be/wtXfl5eHGlE Sydney Part 2 https://youtu.be/4NCQjfWLk_I

This will be a gift for my wife. Years ago I rescued some wood at an old mill dumpsite that was going to burn it all to make room for a housing development. The table is made in Honduras Mahogany was some of that lumber. The center drawer is made in rescued Cherry. A friend of mine was on a construction job where a cherry tree was being taken down. He saved it from the chipper & brought it to me. Dovetail You Tube https://youtu.be/7XaxovjV574 Mark Dovetail https://youtu.be/goRf...

So what can you make with salvaged parquet floor blocks? This one is not a gift, but it is intended to be a centre piece on the family Christmas-Lunch table. Here is the rough design of a candle holder I am making for Friday. (inspired by an LJ posting). The pale sections are parquet blocks, and the pink sections are thin strips of the found wood shown here. This is my first laminating project so there are a few firsts, and a few lessons learned. First glue-up of the main body..Mai...

Rescued Wood #5: Junk Pile Find

12-20-2009 11:12 PM by PG_Zac | 11 comments »

My wife found some long lengths of really grotty looking wood in the junk pile left behind by the previous tenants of the farm, and decided to use them to build a platform in a tree for the goat. She asked me to cut one of the lengths for her, so I did. When I saw the inside, I was seriously intrigued by the rich pink colour that showed in the cut, so I cleaned up the off-cut piece to get a better look. Here is an uncleaned piece next to a cleaned piece..Needless to say, I have confisc...
