Filling the drawers from this project.Turns out you can get a lot in a 13-3/4” wide x 16-3/4” deep x 7” tall drawer. This one has three levels of organization. OCD is completely satisfied.
Bottom level dividers 3/8” x 2-1/2” dividers, friction fit, no glue. Holds touch up filler, stain & graining bottles, burn in sticks.
Middle level is wax rub on sticks. 3/4” deep sandwiched between bottom and top levels
Top level is for the most used s...

In Pete Dexter’s book Deadwood, Wild Bill Hickok’s partner, Charley Utter, is thinking to himself, “He liked having a drawer, it was a neatness you could see just sliding it open.”
Making drawers requires a precision and calm missing from some other jobs around the shop. Cleaning out the dust collector comes to mind. Or hand planing some misbegotten wood like a rowed grain khaya. Drawer building on the other hand needs careful measuring, straight parts, and clear thinking to do a good job....

My Grandfather—they tell me—had many careers [1]. In one of them, he owned some sort of small, wildly unsuccessful machine shop. Nobody knows the details.
One of his things that I’ve had … pretty much all my life … and NEVER knew what it was … was a black box with something like eight or ten differently sized metal blocks, and some plastic “button.”
Only when I started woodworking did I figure out what they were.
They’re GAU...

In my last Drill Press Blog I had found that the taper runout was plus or minus zero, but drills in the chuck wobbled plus or minus 4 thoundths. If I drilled small holes in a piece of wood and held the piece with my fingers the piece vibrated and the hole was less than true. When I make small things, this is an issue. I went out to “Production Tool Supply” and got a “Chuck Lesson” They told me that the old key Jacobs chucks are not as precision as they might be, th...

I found this article, the other day, and keep coming back to it—both literally and in my mind.
Figured I’d share it. I plan to keep all of this in mind as I begin my 2nd night stand….
Maybe others have similar suggestions for increasing precision….

Make a story stick for each project. Record the measurements of L, W, H and internals on one, unchanging stick.

I just finished reading Tom Lovino’s article in Wood Magazine and I have to say it really hit home. I even gave the article to my girlfriend to read and when she was done she said “that sounds just like you!”. If you haven’t read the article, the basic idea is that he was talking to a friend of his who was really bent out of shape because he couldn’t get his table saw into alignment any better than .002 inches. Then, he remembered that his friend is an engineer...
