A new year is almost upon us and I’m going to tell you folks about my tool purchase plans for this year and see if I can get some good advice. Also, as a chance to pat myself on the back, today is my one year anniversary of quitting smoking! If I would have saved what I spent for cigarettes if I would have smoked, I would have $3650 to purchase a woodshop with. Then it’d be all Festool and Gold!

I took some Christmas money (thank you in-laws!) and order a Delta 22-580 bench-top planer. I’m very excited. This will be, by far, my most expensive woodworking tool so far. It should be here Wed… now I just need some rough cut stock!

My wife was starting to get ready for some Christmas decorations. She notified me that she’d like a Sofa table to place against the wall in the kitchen to put decorations on. She also stated a requirement that it be like the Thorsen table that was built by my son Dave. for the Thorsen Table Challenge that we had earlier here on LumberJocks.com . His table has aged some since Dave made it and it now sits in the kitchen where my wife puts her purse when she comes into the house.

Today Dec 1, 2007 was the toy giveaway day for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers Club Toy Workshop.
We make toys all year long and we pass them out on the first Sat in December. This is the 13 yr that it has been done. It’s grown is scope but we are still looking for people that want to volunteer to make toys. We meet on every Wednesday of the year. Our first day for the 2008 toy making in this coming Wednesday.

Ok, so I am sitting here weighing the costs of some tools. On the one hand, the Festool Domino set with dominos, guides, and a dust collector for approximately $1300. On the other hand, I need a table saw and a planer. The money for the domino would likely cover these items. Which way do I go?
The Domino would allow me to do mortise and tennon joints much more easily than now. It would have the greater flexibility of positions, large sizes, etc. compared to the mortise machine. But ...
