African Rosewood, Leadwood and Maple Workbench build #1: Workbench Base Finished

06-12-2020 09:14 AM by carrera4s | 2 comments »

I am busy building a split top Roubo workbench and have recently finished the base. The base is built from some left-over African Rosewood I had, while the top will be Hard Maple. The vices and sliding deadman will be made from Leadwood. Next up is installing some retractable castors and then the DIY screw for the leg and wagon vices. Stay tuned for those updates! Here are a few pictures of the process so far. Glue-up on the laminated legs: Squaring up the legs after lamina...

Hand Tool Woodworking #2: The mainstay of hand tools and woodworking in general Chisels

07-15-2017 02:29 AM by Rwolinski | 3 comments »

I am not sure what all the fuss and bashing going on now on the internet about Narex Chisels. I see article after article that A) they don’t hold and edge, or B) they require a lot of prep, or C) they just are a cheaply made chisel. Well in Reverse order:C: IN the grand scheme of things they are cheap, but not cheaply made. At roughly $13 a copy they are very affordable. Have good length, good balance, and I think they are pretty well made. B:) I have about 14 of these chisels ...

Handtool Basics #2: Bevel Edge Western Bench Chisel Shootout

02-20-2017 08:04 PM by WoodWorkLIFE | 3 comments »

Hey guys, In this video I compare several popular western bench chisel brands for: ease of sharpening, ergonomics, fit to tasks, and general fit and finish. I compared everything I could get my hands on from ALDI, Harbor Freight, Narex, Irwin Marples, Stanley Sweetheart, and even Lie Nielsen and Veritas. These are all obviously opinions and my methods were anything but scientific, but I hope this gives you a little bit more info before you pick out your next set of chisels. View on You...

Are Expensive Chisels Worth the Money?

02-08-2017 11:03 PM by WoodWorkLIFE | 4 comments »

I recently had the opportunity to have chisels from most of the major North American brands; everything from Harbor Freight, Irwin Marples, Stanley Sweetheart, Narex, Lie Nielsen, Veritas, even ALDI workzone. I put them all through there paces: ergonomics, sharpening, flattening, pairing, dovetails, mortise and tenons, even had cut dadoes. I put this video together to sort of sum up the experience, I sort of buried the lead in the video but here are the cliff notes. Veritas is on it̵...

Chisel Sharpening - Another thorn from my side

05-25-2010 02:22 PM by David Craig | 21 comments »

Good Morning, my name is David Craig and I am a former sharpaphobiac transformed into a sharpaholic… The art of sharpening has been very intimidating to me and it has really caused a bit of a road block to my work. No matter how many power tools you have in your collection, woodworking will ultimately lead you to a point where a chisel is in your hand and it needs to be sharp. I fiddled around with the grinder some, have purchased sharpening stones at the store, but I was really out ...

The Great Workshop Vacation

05-21-2010 01:41 PM by David Craig | 10 comments »

Today is the last day of the traditional work week and I am especially geeked in regards to the following week. Every year, I usually take a week off to perform some major work around the house. Last year consisted of building flower boxes and my roofing project. This year, I decided to give home refurbishing a rest and am focusing on wood and workshop projects. I spent the last two weeks getting all my ducks in a row. Mike (jockmike2) and I visited a mill two weeks ago to pick up some woo...

I'm Back...

05-13-2010 09:02 PM by David Craig | 14 comments »

Sorry folks for my little hiatus from the LJ community. I had one week with an extremely busy work schedule followed by a week where my wife and I decided to make our separation permanent. Took a little bit of time to mull things over and have come to the conclusion it is best for both parties. I have a buddy who likes to jokingly remind me that I don’t know enough about women yet, that I was one marriage shy of being educated. On this, I will have to agree with him :) One good thing...
