I have lived in my house almost 9 years, the previous owner built the house and the shop. I have always wanted to change the man door on my shop that leads to my house. The old owner put a hollow door and a dead bolt as the only lock system. He also clad the outside of the door in scraps of sheet metal. I was able to plane the stock for the shelves yesterday. I glued up a large enough blank for two shelves, then used the fence to cut them parallel. I then used the cross-cut sled to square the other sides. I got to use my Delta new mortiser to make all of the mortises (3 on each side x 4 sides = 12 total). Luckily, they were all 3/8” and had the same offset from the front/back. This meant that with one setup, I could knock them all out. If I had done them with a chisel, ...

After working in the Valley for a couple of weeks, I decided to spend some of my harder than I thought earned money to get a mortising machine. I settled on the DELTA 14-651 because of its Amazon reviews and price point ($289). I would’ve loved to get the Powermatic, but that would’ve taken another year to justify ($480). I rationalized that with all of the mortises that I’ll need for the dining room table, that this additional expense will pay itself off on this on...

Thorsen Table Challenge #3: Mortising the legs

Today I cut the legs to length, & Cut the mortises for the aprons. I was setup my mortising attachment to my drill press. My Grizzley crossfeed vise was bolted to the table. I thought, why not use this when cutting the mortises. So I tried it out, & worked great. Once I got it all sqaured up, I drilled out all the mortises in no time at all.
