I seem to be falling deeper and deeper down the hand tool rabbit hole. Somewhere near the bottom of that hole, a guy orders a half set of hollows and rounds from Matt Bickford and waits about 18 months to open the box.
They sure are packed nice. I won’t need to buy any burlap for a while, probably ever. They look nice on the table and I feel like it is Christmas morning.
The rabbit and side round planes with shavings!
Thanks Matt, but I have plenty of shavings sp...

Last time I posted I had glued down the boxes bodies with the inside already french polished
I worked on gluing the marquetry panels to the trimmed to size lid
My favorite moment is when you see it glued down right way up for the first time, it appears slowly while you remove the paper
This glueing of the marquetry on both side had to be precise has they had to be perfectly centered as well as the right way up as when you open the box
the owner will appreciate to g...

After the frustration of eBay, Etsy and tool dealers, I decided to experiment with making my own hollow and round moulding (OK, I’m American but I like the Brit spelling better) planes. Some of you will think I’m a heretic for this, but I made pairs of #6, #8 and #10 by laminating parts together. I am writing this in the hopes it will inspire others to do the same. What follows is the sequence of a typical build.
Since this is an experiment and I’m not trying to make p...

In my above video, Frank Klausz takes us into his new woodworking workshop and shows his amazing, and huge, carpenter’s molding plane that he made at the request of his local tool collector group in New Jersey, called the “The Craft”. Frank asked me to share their website link here.
Frank wanted to demonstrate this molding plane when I was filming a video tour of his new woodworking workshop.

If you’re interested in wooden molding planes you might enjoy this video that I just published. I had ordered a mini panel raising and 1/8” beading plane from Philly Planes (Phil Edwards makes his planes in England) about eight months ago, and just received them.
I unbox and assemble them and make some test moldings. I then take them apart and inspect and comment on their quality. If you have the bandwidth, I uploaded them in 1080 HD quality for best viewing of the results.

In my above video I show how I clean and oil my antique molding planes. Of course, this method can apply to any wooden hand planes.
My friend was kind enough to give me about 65 antique molding planes (thanks Bill!). Instead of spending a ton of time refurbishing them all right now, I thought I’d simply clean and oil them, and refurbish a plane when needed.
I like to use boiled linseed oil (if you can’t find it at a local ha...
