Herman Miller Design and Production Video

01-04-2009 08:11 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 19 comments »

What I should be doing… is getting my shop in order because I got a truckload of wood and sheet goods from guy that was moving his shop. I have a built-in banquette to get going on in the shop now that the holidays and family mayhem are behind us (in a good grandkids way.) I found gold! Actually what I found was a Herman Miller prduction video while digging through the Furnitude blog by LJ member Mitch. I just LOVE Herman Miller. What is very important about this video is th...

Inspiration #1: Science Fiction Woodworking?

08-12-2008 08:32 PM by 12ftguru | 5 comments »

A friend of mine passed this on to me from a science fiction blog called io9.com. It’s a brief article on a woodworker named Jahnna Y. Klukas. I popped over for a quick look at her site and spent the next 30 minutes saying “Oh my God.” over and over again. Her work is simply amazing. This is just one of the pieces called “Hall of the Mountain King” I think this has given me about a year’s worth of inspiration (and a really long wish list).

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #21: Glamdring, Summer Awards and, Left Overs

07-29-2008 06:27 AM by frank | 3 comments »

Glamdring, Summer Awards and, Left Overs ....and so it ‘just is’. All good stories must have a place of start….then some middle ground….and then comes the ‘whats all left over’ or maybe I should say, the ‘left overs’. And as such, it seems fitting that since this is about ‘hobbit holes in my-world’....I should bring in one famous player, who working with me helped get this story going back in the early days of summer. That bein...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #20: All I See Is No-Junk

All I See Is No-Junk In my world, (and not as the lines where some see, when the plane of time is split as between earth and heaven….what those jokester’s of wordy word explanations first told us, to limit us into seeing their definitions of linear horizons….hmmm, quite a word spread there//here) means; there is no-junk! How can one see junk, when the world is filled with the beauty of creative genus and we as workers of wood are part of this process? And so it was tha...

Looking at Jonke ....and so i went walking in search of some jonke, that there word of middle age time frame of mind, and what i found was not some more latin names for juncus, but what i searched for was before mine eyes all-ready as ‘junk art’.... —-one can get so lost in the definitions that are imposed upon us,till it seems that our mind just can-not shake free and see, those boxes are ever around to drown the imagination of mind, while other’s pray to keep th...

Artropolis Art Fair in Chcago

04-29-2008 11:59 PM by Alan | 3 comments »

My wife, Penny, and I recently finished our first marathon. At least that’s what it felt like after attending the giant Artropolis Art Fair at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.More… Giant doesn’t begin to describe it. 5 separate shows on 3 full floors of the Mart. 4 contemporary art shows and one antiques fair. The centerpiece is Art Chicago, featuring 180 galleries from around the world showing over 2000 artists. NEXT is almost as large and is focused on cutting edge and ...

Inspired Design #4: Leila & Massimo Vignelli

04-24-2008 06:41 PM by FritzM | 0 comments »

This is a wonderfully casual interview with two renowned designers. Even if their designs disagree with your own thoughts on the subject, they offer some very insightful views on why and how they design. Also, a brief description of how the design for their sofa evolved through discussions with their manufacturer. There is a section in the middle where they are preparing a meal and their cats are running around….. try to push through because there are some great moments all the way t...

The Best of 'Wood Art" #10: "Polyporus betulinus" --by RusticWoodArt

01-11-2008 02:56 PM by frank | 4 comments »

Polyporus betulinus ....just thought I would post a shot of one of my keepers of the ideas that fungi around inside my head, before manifesting their molds of desire in the mind-full beauty of ‘wood art’…. And so if any want to follow, then here’s a short course in General Mycology….or as some may say,....WHO-ology and WHAT-ology….! Walking the woods and gathering wood is not the only thing I gather, since what good is wood unless ones starts to un...
