Mystery Solved – After cutting and fitting the last of the horizontal dividers, I glued everything together and gave this cabinet a few coats of whitewash to match the walls. I cut the first row of Ambrosia maple drawer fronts … … the rest will be cut sequentially from these two boards. I just love the curl. Dividers – I decided to have twenty drawers in this cabinet to store nails, screws, and various other hardware. Twenty drawers will require three vertical dividers and four horizontal dividers. I decided to tackle the verticals first. I have through dados on the top face of the cabinet bottom and stop dados on the bottom face of the jack plane shelf. As with half-blind dovetails I can only saw so far to form the shoulders of a stopped dado … no problem … I’ll just use the corner ...

Filling In the Shell – Alaska was fantastic! We got to see the Northern Lights, walk with reindeer, go dog sledding, and I had my first Alaskan Icy Bay IPA. I must admit … it was hard coming back to Lilburn. But come back we did … and after unpacking it didn’t take me too long to get back in the shop and continue work on my mystery cabinet. And So It Begins - It was a veritable heatwave in Lilburn today … 75°! I took advantage of the wonderful weather and started roughing out some cabinet parts. I managed to cut and shape the sides … … and get the horizontals cut. I got a bit carried away with the coping saw … … but nothing a good filing won’t fix! Considerations and Design – I want this cabinet to house my molding planes, jack plane, and various pieces of hardware. Currently, I have cans of stain and assorted chemicals all over the shop. I thought this cabinet might be a good way to corral all of these cans onto its top. But first I need to think about some dimensions. I have 22-1/2” between rafters … … and 36” from the top of my sharpening station to the wall plate. So my cabinet will have to fit within those dimensions...

The Problem –
In my first shop lay-out, I had my bench positioned along a wall under a small window. I had my tool chest at the end of the bench, and pegs and racks for various tools on the wall above, all within easy reach. This was a great set-up for a number of years.
