A Story of Mountain Rifles, an Old Man, and a Boy

This is a story about muzzle loading “mountain” rifles, an old man, and a boy. One of the rifles is shown in these pictures. The old man was my grandfather. And the boy was me – many years ago. I come from an Appalachian Mountains heritage where, to say it gracefully, people weren’t wealthy. I received a tiny cheap handgun that’s supposedly been in the family. Hence, it is a very prized possession. I’m going to shape some bubinga handles on the belt sander.There are pins that keep the handle registered. I’ll have to modify what I’ve got in stockTapped and transferred the pin locationDialed in; I’ll do Danish oil wetsanded to 600 grit

shotgun #3: second part of the carving

Well here I am now. The carving continues. I believe now that I am done with this first side. I wasn’t sure what to do to be honest with you, so I just sat there at the couch with it on my lap. I cut a piece of paper and taped it to the gun, cutting around the Drake. I just started doodling on it while watching TV and this is what I came up with. My fellow Legionnaires got called out today to provide Military Honors for a Brother who got orders to report to the CG above.
