Winning the Sumguy lottery

08-21-2017 03:57 AM by MDots | 1 comment »

I am not a lucky person, despite my Irish heritage. I have never won a game of bingo, or one of those stick-your-name-in-the-hat drawings, or anything like that. However, lady luck might have accidentally turned her head and sneezed in my direction while hanging on the arm of a far handsomer man than myself, as I have had more wood related luck in the past few weeks. I may have mentioned before that I work in a shop adjacent to a hardwood flooring company, and occasionally dig through t...

Flea Market Friday #1: Big box of chisels and files!

05-13-2016 04:43 PM by ThomasLightle | 2 comments »

This is the first in a series of videos I plan on making that reports on the cool tools I find at the local flea market. I won’t be able to release one every Friday, since they don’t always have something worth buying, but when I do find something, I’ll make a new installment. Enjoy! Zagrebs HUGE flea market.

03-21-2012 12:09 PM by gavinzagreb | 10 comments »

Zagreb has a huge flea market in the wastelands on the edge of town out by the garbage mountain !I love flea markets, and this one is one of the best. There is all sorts of new products, from clothes to tools and everything in between, along with a second hand car market plus a massive section of second hand goods. Literally everything can be found there. I get most of my router bits there (new) and I like to get old hand tools there also. There’s also many BBQ type food and drink estab...

The Motherlode

10-31-2010 04:40 AM by Rick Boyett | 8 comments »

I took my wife to First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX. For those of you that do not know, the entire town of Canton, TX becomes a huge flea market on the weekend prior to the first Monday of each month. There you can find lots of planes, but there are two booths that are of particular interest. Those booths have the motherlode of hand planes and other tools. First up a 19th century workbench from Hammacher Schlemmer & Co. Have any of you ever seen an ALUMINUM No. 45? ...

Tips for dealing with Flea Markets

09-08-2010 10:24 PM by swirt | 5 comments »

I ran into this while searching for some details on one of the saws I just acquired. It is a collection of tips that originated on the old tools email list more than 10 years ago. It is generally geared toward old hand tool enthusiasts, but much can be applied to modern tools as it deals more with people than with the actual tools. The tips focus on a flea market setting but also apply to garage sales and estate sales. The people targeted include significant others and the people sellin...

Flea Market Scores

Dropped by the local weekend flea market on Sunday, just thought I’d kill a few minutes sharing some of the goodies I picked up…. (thats right, its “sharing” not “bragging” lol!) A B&D twin-screw benchtop clamping thingy I got for $4, looks damn handy, tho those metal jaws are pretty ragged, figure prolly remove em and either sand down the plastic jaws smooth or epoxy on some hardwood ones. .... A Craftsman benchtop router table, got it fo...

Well don't I feel dumb

01-24-2010 05:48 AM by Jeison | 6 comments »

So when I first came out to Rockford, my parents showed me this huge flea indoor/outdoor flea market not too far from where we live, that was open every weekend, and I’ve found more than one hidden gem there. I’ve seen plenty of people selling all kinds of tools, in all kinds of conditions, althought it wasn’t until last summer that I really got into woodworking. Anyways, originally they had told me that it was only open spring/summer. Last time I went there were lots of ...

My Tools #5: Hugemongous Flea Market. One Purchase.

10-17-2009 01:33 AM by Eric | 4 comments »

I mentioned on my blog that I planned on going to the world's largest flea market in Canton, Texas. Well, I went a couple weeks ago, and was both overwhelmed and underwhelmed. The size of the flea market was staggering. But what was more surprising was the ridonculous amount of garbage that people were selling. From the standpoint of tools, I found that 80% of the tools were covered in rust, 10% were too ordinary to even bother looking at, 5% were grossly overpriced and 5% were worth consi...
