One of the downsides to a small attic shop is the crazy amount of dust in the air. I have some windows I can open while it is nice out, but even that only has a limited effect. After browsing the internet I decided it was time to make an air cleaner. I did not want to make a major investment in a fan, and the typical box fan was just not powerful enough in my opinion. We use a Lasko Wind machine in the living room and bedroom and these fans are GREAT!! I happened to catch an end of the sea...

Mahogany Shop Dust Extractor / Air Filter

View on YouTube As we all know woodworking involves a lot of sanding, and that makes a lot of dust in the air. So yesterday I found an old extractor, it was from my growroom but still works. I made a box with joinery, painted the fan black and as usual gave it a mahogany finish, I think it makes a nice contrast, what do you think??

Pretty quickly a hobby woodworker realizes how uncomfortable it is to come back into your home with a nose full of sawdust never mind how that same dust permeates every inch of your workspace. It coats every inch with a fine mist and means more cleanup later which just add to the annoyance. There was a tip a few years back in FWW where someone took a box fan, and attached a furnace filter to it with some wood blocks to hold it in place. The beauty of the design, once built, was that it was super easy to switch out a dirty filter…. I remembered this old tip, and snagged a 20” x 20” box fan last weekend when i went out to pick up a new dehumidifier. The old one nearly started a fire when I plugged it in.
