Cutting Board Tablet Stand

01-17-2016 09:50 PM by Chris McDowell | 2 comments »

I had an oak pallet which I broke down and was able to salvage enough to make two iPad stands. They were made as gifts for Christmas. My wife showed me pictures of these on Etsy saying that her sister wanted one. So one went to her and the other went to my mother. Here is a video of the build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj_dzBfL1UA

Kreg Jig Pen Press

12-19-2015 01:39 PM by Chris McDowell | 5 comments »

I’ve been using a combination of a quick clamp and the drill press to press pen kits together. Both the quick clamp and the drill press are awkward to use doing this. I was looking at pictures of pen presses recently and it dawned on me that I could probably use my Kreg jig. It was way easier than using the clamp and drill press. The only thing is that there is just barely enough space to press the transmission, but I found if I angled it at first I could just press a little, then chan...

Woodturning a simple candle holder

12-12-2015 02:09 PM by Chris McDowell | 3 comments »

Before this project, I had never made anything other than pens on the lathe. I had some scrap pieces from an oak pallet and I decided to laminate them together and experiment. I didn’t know what it would be when I started. I had thought maybe do a little Christmas tree, but then it started looking like a candle holder, so I just went with that. I don’t have a chuck, so I just turned it between a spur center and the tail-stock. I can really see the value of having a chuck now...

DIY Christmas Tree Stand Cover | Rustic Christmas Tree Box

12-02-2015 03:09 PM by Chris McDowell | 3 comments »

I didn’t know this was a thing until this month when my wife showed me pictures and asked me to make one. This one is made out of an old pallet and some old house siding. Not difficult to make at all, just a simple box glued and nailed together. My wife stained it. I was skeptical while making it. It is basically just an ugly box. But it looks pretty cool once you set the tree in it, I gotta say. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/m-oJBwRPGyk

Woodturning - Making a Cocobolo Pen

11-13-2015 06:32 PM by Chris McDowell | 2 comments »

I got a lathe in June 2015. It’s a Rikon mini lathe. For more on it, watch this video. Anyway, It sat unused until October 2015 when I was finally able to purchase some tools. To learn how to turn, I am starting with pens. I got everything I needed to make pens and have made 2 on this lathe. The first two pens I made were at a friend’s shop. He invited me to check out his shop and showed me how to turn pens. I knew then that I needed a lathe because it was just fun to turn out ...

Simple Pen Blank Drilling Jig

10-24-2015 01:09 PM by Chris McDowell | 1 comment »

I got a new lathe in June 2015, but couldn’t use it until I was able to purchase some tools in October 2015. I decided to start learning woodturning by making pens. In order to make pens, you have to drill a hole in a blank and glue an insert into the hole. It’s favorable to drill the hole square from one end to the other. You can buy a vise for your drill press made specifically for pen blanks for $50, but I had already spent enough on the tools and couldn’t afford one. I...

I met Rob Cosman! My first trip to Woodcraft.

10-14-2015 12:11 AM by Chris McDowell | 8 comments »

I went to Woodcraft for the first time ever in order to get some tools so that I can start doing some turning on my new lathe. Couldn’t have picked a better day to go. The entire store was 15% off. Also, when I walked in I saw a group of people standing around a workbench near the entrance. I recognized the dude they were all talking to and realized that it was Rob Cosman, the great hand-tool woodworker from Canada. He’s on YouTube as well. Check him out. Watch the video her...

My Wife Makes A Pumpkin Door Hanger On The Scroll Saw

09-27-2015 01:27 AM by Chris McDowell | 9 comments »

Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdAK5fz7n3A My wife has picked up the scroll saw in the last year. She expressed an interest in scrolling so I bought an entry level Shop Fox 16” scroll saw for her. She’s made plenty of things including the pumpkin door hanger for our front door shown in the picture below. She saw a similar thing at a store, took a picture of it, and made one of her own at home. She has had 7 or 8 orders from people wanting her to make one ...

Farmhouse Table Build - Construction Grade Lumber

09-13-2015 07:00 PM by Chris McDowell | 12 comments »

You can see how I built the table in a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL0kh2faVpk My sister-in-law and her husband recently moved back home from out of town. They have a dining room, but no dining table so she asked me to build one for her. She picked out some plans online and they are free from Shanty-2-Chic.com. She told me not to change a thing. The only things I did different were related to the construction and assembly. Otherwise, it looks just like the one in the p...

Shop Update #6: New Rikon 70-100 Mini Lathe

07-26-2015 12:06 AM by Chris McDowell | 7 comments »

I recently did a little belated spring cleaning in the shop. My wife helped me pull out everything and sweep and rearrange. The main reason we did all this is because I recently bought a new lathe and needed to put it somewhere. My father-in-law had an old bench in his basement which I took and cut down to size so that the lathe would be at the proper height. The lathe is a Rikon 70-100 Mini Lathe. I basically do a product tour in the video, so check it out if you want to know more ab...
