Woodworking on a Half-Shoestring #96: Progress: Raised Dog Bowl Holders

I promised my youngest daughter for Christmas raised dog bowl holders for her two dogs. These are based on plans from Build Something. I posted in an earlier blog entry the prototype I built using vinyl-laminated chipboard and pine studs for the legs. You can see it in the picture, in front of the unfinished units. Things have gotten crazy here, but this is normal for the Christmas season. First we get the big projects that must be done before the holiday entertainment happens. (2 bathrooms, 5 kitchen modifications, 2 dining-room tables and repair a set of chairs) Next we have the special Christmas gifts, (a cane, a walking stick, a doll bed, 2 closets modified, a custom bench seat, and they keep coming in) Then there are the things my wife has asked me to make, (spoons, cutting boards, pen and...

Scofield Study Bible Box Christmas Gift #2: Preparing The Stock

Since I just so happen to have the exact bible on hand that I plan to give, I took some quick measurements and estimated the box size. The final dimensions should be 10” long by 7” wide and 2 3/4” tall. I started out by cutting down the lumber to approximately 11” strips and ripped them to 3” long. Woodworking on a Half-Shoestring #99: Child's Tool Box & Tea Light Sets

Finally making some progress on the gift building. The neighbor’s two year old is into tools, so I made for him a child’s size carpenter’s tool box. The sides and bottom are red oak, the ends hard maple, and the handle and pins out of poplar dowels. The tea light sets are going out to friends and family. The pines bases were cut from the staves of a large cable spool. While the holders will accept tea light candles, for safety sake I am using their LED counterpart. ...
