and then it becomes....... #2: behind closed doors

11-01-2008 09:23 PM by kolwdwrkr | 2 comments »

It’s been a while since this blog started. My mind has been full of so many projects, most of which were rash decisions to start. When I wrote the original part of this I mentioned the materials and that I would start the project the next day. Well I did cut a chunk of maple and it made it’s way from the shop to my dining room table. The table has become my carving bench, this way I can spend time with the future owner to this project who happens to be my girlfriend. The exci...

and then it becomes....... #1: You never know

When things become confusing, and I’m talking about the design aspect now as I have yet to begin this project, the shop gets quiet. My mind scopes the shop in search of something. A piece of material? A jig? Anything that can “push” me in the direction I need to go. Does my piece require the use of my leigh jig? After that it was a relaxing time spent catching fish and enjoing the cool mountains Anyway, back to the serving tray. I decided not to add any more keys for fear of messing up a good thing. The silver wire inlay proved to be a little more difficult than I anticipated but for the first ti...

Serving Tray #1: 1st Blog

07-30-2008 07:50 AM by Bigbuck | 5 comments »

I started this project because I needed something to keep me busy until I decided on my next big project. I got the initial idea of doing a serving tray from the summer contest, not because I thought I could win but because it would give me something to do and also allow me to challenge myself. The bottom is a glued up panel of soft maple with a 1/8” walnut inlay of walnut. I cut the inlay out using the router with a 1/8” bit held free hand cutting close to the line and then c...
