Bandsaw Box Bandit #5: Its all finished except the finish

08-09-2009 04:21 PM by Walnut_Weasel | 7 comments »

Well I was finally able to finish my second box yesterday. That is, everything is finished but the finish… I went to Home Depot to get some clear oil, and for some reason the crappy depot here in our small town does not carry it! I knew I should have bought some when I was at Lowes earlier in the week! Oh and I still need to buy flocking for the inside. That is also impossible to find in this small town. I guess it is time to buy it online! I have also noticed that I need to wo...

Look Ma, no table saw!

09-10-2016 02:51 PM by JayT | 19 comments »

About two years ago, I started thinking about making a major change to my woodworking and wanted to write a bit about the journey, just in case others are in a similar situation. Most woodworkers consider a table saw to be the centerpiece of the shop and an indispensable part of their woodworking. Learning woodworking in school shop class, I was indoctrinated with the same thinking. At some point, however, I started to question whether that was really true for me. First off, my shop is o...

random #25: Internet intrigue! What have I wrought?

08-21-2009 03:19 AM by Gary Fixler | 13 comments »

What a day I’m having! Okay, so September of last year I was gearing up to buy a band saw. I liked the Craftsman 18” Wood/Metal deal for $1300 (and eventually got that one). Above the picture on the saw’s page were clickable, hierarchical categories, something like “Power Tools > Saws > Band Saws.” You could click on each to go to broader categories – pretty standard. I noticed in the address bar that these category names were echoed in the URL as variab...

Old BandSaw upgraded, Pulley questions to fellow Lumberjockers

01-25-2013 05:24 AM by James Lango | 14 comments »

This is my 1952 Craftsman 12” Band Saw. She has been soo unrealiable over the years and i was on the verge of tossing her out. BUT- i figured to give it a go and see what she can do when everything is tuned up and running smooth. Did some research and reading, found out that although this saw is old and relatively small (12”) she was able to hold her own back in the day. New paint.New guidesNew thrust bearings (stainless steel pulleys work in place)New solid ...

Hello all LumberJocks! As promised in my Gloat to End all Gloats post, I’m starting a blog series dedicated to discovering, moving in, and setting up the dedicated shop we got as part of our recent home purchase. I plan to put several types of posts under this one series, which will range from discovering the new tools to setting up the shop and making it my own. I’d like to start by letting y’all know we closed on the house on Friday afternoon, so we have spent all weekend clean...

I Actually Tested YOUR Table Saw Suggestions! I thought is was Interesting...

03-29-2017 06:40 PM by CharlieK | 10 comments »

View on YouTube Try this link if video doesn't work I did a video last week about ripping wood that has tension in it. I said that my preferred way to handle it is to walk away from the table saw and use a band saw. WELL! I got a LOT of feedback and suggestions about other ways to deal with that. So, I decided that I would actually test a few of these methods. Since I made this video I got an additional suggestion and that is to use a dado blade, but I haven’t tested that ...

Out of the scrap pile and into a gift #11: Bird house from weathered deck wood

02-21-2019 04:22 PM by sras | 8 comments »

This project build is from 2015. I gave it away before I took pictures of the completed birdhouse. Last fall I finally took some pictures. This started with a pile of boards salvaged from a worn out deck. There were a couple pieces of tight grain fir in the pile that caught my interest. So I grabbed a few pieces. I re-sawed the worn wood away with the idea that the underlying tight grain fir would be of interest. However, once the weathered wood was cut away, the fir wasn’t al...
