Handplane Restoration #1: Planes, Planes, Planes

03-20-2007 05:52 AM by WayneC | 25 comments »

After a long week at work, I decided it was time to start the process of restoring my bench planes. I have been collecting them for a while with the intent of getting a good set of operational hand planes. I am hoping I will get a good set of usable planes at a reasonable cost. Currently, I have the following size planes set aside for restoration: #3, #4, #4 1/2, #605, #5 1/2, #6, #7 and #8. All of these are Stanley except for the #8 which is a Sargent VBM 428. The #4 1/2 and t...

03-22-2007 05:58 AM by WayneC | 8 comments »

I’ve had a couple of 12-14 hour workdays this week and have not had the opportunities for restoring any planes. I decided to take a little time this evening to discuss items that will be needed for the restoration process. The basis for this list comes from the Ernie Conover Video on Reclaiming flea market planes. Hopefully, he will update this video and release on DVD. The list is as follows: Lap Plate – used to lap the sole and sides of a plane- Plastic Laminate – ...

Plane restoration #4: Stanley/Bailey No 6 second plane part #2 of 3

01-07-2010 09:08 AM by Alonso | 5 comments »

Hey folks, We did lot of progress on the latest restoration project for the second Baiiley No 6 that I got from Ebay, and I can almost call this a complete project, but I still need to find out how to resolve the issue with the broken horn on the tote, and if anybody else can help me with this question I post earlier, the blade is very very sharp but is not square (there may be a 1/16 gap on one of the corners) so if anyone else know how to resolve the issue I have on that post that will b...

Hand plane restoring #2: Restoring is addictive

02-09-2010 12:04 PM by jchomme | 7 comments »

I guess this is kind of a venting process. Ive recently restored a few Bailey’s (#3 and 2-4’s) and its getting addictive. Ive cleaned some and Ive tuned some but putting a fresh coat of paint, polishing the brass, and refurbing the totes and knobs is very rewarding. Ive accumulated more baileys than I need, but when I see one I want to make it shine again(hopefuly better). Amongst other hand plane stuff I am “refurbing” my 4’s. ended up with a union in the ...
