A Challenge

10-29-2010 01:44 AM by Russel | 14 comments »

I was feeling a bit predictable so I set myself a challenge. I had three boards that, on the surface, looks less than pretty. So, I decided I would make “something” with them. Here are the three boards: The two on the right are Ash with some rather interesting discoloration. The one on the left was “I know not what” when I started. I started by cutting the left board in half, and then cutting it again at the split. I flattened on side and glued the two p...

06-12-2011 05:07 AM by therookie | 1 comment »

Well today was an extremley busy day my dad and I went and did a tree clean up job for a guy in my scout troop. We hauled out 2 mounded 8’ x 16’ trailer loads of box elder and I got some pretty nice wood but thats a later blog. When we were all done with the tree and had everything cleaned up I got to get back to work on my WorkBench. So I put the end aprons on, made the clamp bars and got the holes drilled in them notched them out and put the slots in the bench top pieces and ...

My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #926: Snowflake Tray - Version 2

01-07-2013 12:18 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 11 comments »

I had a good day yesterday finishing up my new snowflake candle tray and getting some instructions written. I know the tray looked finished yesterday, but I wanted to see how it would look with a little tint and – yes – some sparkles added to it. I was certainly not disappointed. I had purposely used ash to cut the tray because of its light color. While maple can be light in color like the ash, I find that sometimes the grain is very nondescript and when I use stain or color...

My daughter Erin came out to the shop and scrolled me some Christmas ornaments for a charity event my Guild participates in each year. She is a natural-born artist, and I don’t have to tell you how much it means for her to come out there and join me in the shop every once in a while.Music playing, beautiful weather, & having great company in the shop equals a very nice morning.I am very blessed.

DVD Cabinet of Ash #11: Door installed, and a PIP

11-12-2019 01:55 AM by bandit571 | 4 comments »

Door came out of the clamps ok. But, you would not think it would be so hard to fit a door….grrr, cussing began right away… Trouble began when I laid the door on the case….bottom of the door fitted up nicely with the sides…but, as I went up the sides…case seemed to “flair out” a bit….seemed the two shelves had bowed the sides out….Made a few marks, and planed and belt sanded until the sides matched the edges of the door…Once thi...

Box from Ash scraps #1: Start up

03-20-2019 07:03 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Ok, a little background on this one….just before all those trips to the Hospital happened…I had a bunch of leftovers from the Desk project….even had the better looking pieces all resawn down to 3/8” stuff….then, once I was allowed to work IN the shop, Chester Drawers Project started up…. So…now I have the time to putter around with the Ash boards.. Picked out 4 that almost matched each other…jointed the ends, trimmed a couple for length&#...

A Paul Sellers' Box build #4: Feeling groovy

01-17-2020 10:34 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Today’s one hour shoptime ( plus Laundry Detail.) was to get some grooves made…first one was the easier of the bunch…as long as I set it up for the correct edge.. More of a rebate, but was needed for the floor board to sit in… Because this sits above the drawer opening…the rest of the grooves were almost in the middle of the boards…had to slide the fence way out… AND, make sure I “pulled” from the right direction….first gro...
