Medieval Style Wooden Sword – Woodworking

02-21-2013 01:52 PM by Chris Mobley | 3 comments »

I recently tried my hand at making a Medieval style wooden sword. This is not something that I have ever attempted before, but I read a few articles that made me think “I could do that!” I decided to give it a go. Since this was my first sword, my intent was to make it for decorative purposes and not for actual fighting. I did some research on what the best strategy would be, and came up with a game plan. One of the number one things that I learned during my research is when you are creat...

How It All Began

02-20-2013 01:48 PM by Chris Mobley | 3 comments »

How it All Began! My love for woodworking began with my father. When I was young, my dad had a workshop that I would always sit and watch him work. He was a man of few words, but I enjoyed watching him work. I don’t remember exactly what my first project was, but at around age 13, I remember asking my father if I could use his saw for the first time. I remember his response being “Sure, just don’t hurt yourself.” I have great memories of just hanging out in the workshop. A lot of the time, I w...

Fish Out of Water

02-19-2013 03:20 PM by Chris Mobley | 2 comments »

Fish Out of Water – Intarsia Woodworking Most everything that I do, I do with someone in mind and/or for some reason. I very rarely make something just to make it. I found a picture a while back that I really liked of a fish jumping up out of the water to catch a dragon fly. What drew me to this design was the way the water seemed to splash right out of the frame over a log. I had it printed and held on to it until now. My brother-in-law had a band saw that he never used and it see...

My First Intarsia

02-15-2013 03:54 PM by Chris Mobley | 3 comments »

My First Intarsia I was looking through a woodworking magazine one day and stumbled across an article on Intarsia. The article said that Intarsia was a forgotten art that was gaining again in popularity. I was just intrigued by the pictures and decided to give it a try and create my first intarsia piece. I picked out and ordered my first pattern of a lake scene with a swan. I began on the piece right away. I had a wonderful time creating the design and putting it all together. When I w...

The Wood Thief

02-15-2013 02:00 PM by Chris Mobley | 13 comments »

The Wood Thief – MaggieThis past weekend, I realized I was being robbed by the wood thief. I began several new projects for clients and friends. One piece in particular, has a significant amount of very small pieces of wood. Each piece is cut out, sanded, and put together like a jig saw puzzle. I turned around to do some sanding and when I came back to my work bench, I notice one of my pieces that I had just completed was missing. After looking under my workbench and around the area,...

Home on the Hill

Home on the Hill Intarsia Woodworking Home on the HillCreating custom intarsia woodworking often finds its best design from a story. One stormy day in April, not very different than any other day, tragedy struck in Alabama. My father was out for the morning working as usual. He decided to come home early because there were some reports that bad weather was coming. He could not have gotten home at any better of a time. As he pulled into the driveway, he had just enough time to find his w...

The Panhead Eagle

02-07-2013 01:05 PM by Chris Mobley | 0 comments »

After seeing some of my work, my boss approached me one day with a request for his father. His father’s birthday was quickly approaching and he wanted to do something special. I talked to him about his father’s interest and hobbies, and I learned that he owned a 1956 Panhead Harley Davidson, and his passion was working on and restoring this bike. I wanted to incorporate this into something for him. I thought for a while on what could be done. I called my daughter who does computer aided d...
