Cherry Amoire #3: Putting it all together

02-04-2014 05:34 PM by swandog | 5 comments »

Fitting drawers is not for the faint of heart. It’s at this point in the project you wish you would’ve spent more time making sure everything was square. I went with metal full pull out slides..or I guess they are 18” slides and the carcass depth is 21” or so.The upper doors are your basic mortise and tenon joinery…the tenon is a haunch tenon. The hardest part about the doors is getting the hinge mortise done correctly…that is why the one door on the lef...

Cherry Amoire #2: Building the drawers

02-04-2014 05:23 PM by swandog | 0 comments »

I had read a lot about the best way to build drawers. I was going back and forth on do I make them out of plywood or solid wood. In the end I didn’t want to have to glue up sides etc so I went with baltic birch plywood. I chose to do dovetails on them and that was a challenge….The tearout was almost unavoidable…I have a PC 2012 dovetail jig and I needed a way to have a backboard that would help prevent the tearout…I ended up using a piece of pine with two small refe...

Cherry Amoire #1: Getting past the design

02-04-2014 05:05 PM by swandog | 0 comments »

I had been thinking about building some sort of cabinet for the office for awhile. It needed to be functional and most importantly my wife had to approve. :) There are alot of good examples out there but I never found one that I really liked. I love the Dr. White chest but I needed more drawers. My office is kind of a dumping ground of pictures, computer parts and paperwork…I needed something that would organize and hide all that. Here is a drawing that I started with. I knew the gen...

Jewlery Amoire #9: Drawers Installed - Finally

01-18-2011 01:39 AM by Zuki | 1 comment »

Well I finally have the drawers installed. There is no hardware, and they are a little “un-smooth” in their operation, but they are built and they do work. I have some fine tuning to do . . . but that will happen later. Cheers !

Jewlery Amoire #7: Drawer Assembly - Part 1

12-30-2010 02:41 AM by Zuki | 1 comment »

How is it that something so simple can cause so much grief? I had it all worked out in my head and everything was going fine until I made one stupid mistake . . . actually I made the same mistake 16 times. I was not happy when I discovered what I did . . . actually DW saw it first and I’m glad she did as I would have had to do a whole lot of deconstruction to fix the errors if she was not there to pick up on it. Watch the video. Its all fine now. :-)

Jewlery Amoire #1: The Plan - definately not SU

12-11-2010 01:47 AM by Zuki | 3 comments »

Well its getting mighty close to Christmas and I have one big project left . . . a jewelry armoire for DW. I started by planing down a bunch of 15\16 Poplar to 3/4”. I’m not really sure if I have enough, but if I don’t I can run to Home Depot and pick up some D4S. I have to joint the boards before using, but that will be another day. Last night I developed the plan for the project. This is how I plan most of my projects: grab a piece of paper and a pen or pencil, si...
