Boxfan Ambient Air Filter Hack Revisited #2: New Tests and New Filters

06-27-2020 01:38 PM by clagwell | 2 comments »

Last year I acquired a Hot Wire Anemometer. I intended to do some dust collector testing with it but that didn’t work out. It seems a HWA is really a tool for HVAC work where the pressures and velocities are a lot lower. That should be perfect for testing a box fan filter. In order to get the measurement points away from the complex flow patterns near the fan and have a well defined area for the traverse I fabricated a test duct with the vertical traverse calibration points. (...

Boxfan Ambient Air Filter Hack Revisited #1: Seven years ago...

A few years ago I decided to try the trick of slapping a furnace filter on the back of a box fan to make an ambient air cleaner. I wasn’t at all happy with the performance. It seemed like the filter almost completely choked off the airflow. The filter clamps can hold up to three inches of filters but I could barely get any air through a single filter let alone two or three. In a previous blog entry, I started to document the building of my ambient air cleaner. I didn’t do a blog on it’s completion and the WW gods spited me for it….. I initially installed 2 pre-filters (intake side) and a third MERV 12 filter on the exhaust side. After building the air cleaner, I learned that this arrangement is not recommended. I found out why! It seams that the filter, placed after the squirrel cage blower, puts back pressure on the fan and causes the motor...

UPDATE: 2/26/13Install pictures in POST # 21Additional Filter relocation info/pictures in BLOG # 21, of this series! Greetings All, Welcome to my WORKSHOP! I CAN say that now, as I am able to work in it. I haven’t really made progress toward organization or efficiency, which makes the work I do do that much more difficult (hee hee, I said do do, in my best Butthead voice ). In my previous two blog entries, I had cut the 3/4” ply for my air cleaner (A. C.) & relocated ...
