My Long Wait for a Workshop #5: Home Made Air Filter

04-26-2011 05:24 PM by JWags | 13 comments »

Hello again, Just finished my homemade shop air filter. I had to change my original plans, which were to hang it from the ceiling. That’s because I also wanted a washable filter, to keep down on the ongoing costs. So here was the final criteria: I needed a blower that would draw and push at least 800 CFm, a primary filter that would catch up to 5 microns, and a secondary filter that would catch 1 micron particles, and not be cost prohibitive. Plus – it had to be quiet. S...

In Ceiling Air Cleaner #1: An air cleaner that you won't walk into...

03-11-2013 07:49 PM by chopnhack | 0 comments »

Well, it all started out with a trip to buy an air cleaner off of craig’s list some time ago. I saw a used Jet AFS-1000B for sale for about $150. After checking out the spec’s, I thought, gee, this would work great, 30×24x12, that’s not too big, I can find a place for it…. Drove about 1.5 hours round trip to discover that hey 30×24x12 is actually too BIG! I imagined myself hanging this thing near the step down that I have entering my garage and knocking mysel...

I made an air filter using a series of filters and then also a fan from an AC unit. Below are two pictures of it and more on how I made it. Here is more on how I made it.

Dungeon to Lair: That's the plan at least... #21: If At First You Don't Succeed....

In a previous blog entry, I started to document the building of my ambient air cleaner. I didn’t do a blog on it’s completion and the WW gods spited me for it….. I initially installed 2 pre-filters (intake side) and a third MERV 12 filter on the exhaust side. After building the air cleaner, I learned that this arrangement is not recommended. I found out why! It seams that the filter, placed after the squirrel cage blower, puts back pressure on the fan and causes the motor...

DIY Air scrubber #1: Ordering filters and designing

11-24-2019 02:30 AM by jbswearingen | 0 comments »

I ordered three 20×20x4 MERV 11 and three 20×20x1 MERV 8 filters to build what I hope will become an efficient air scrubber for my 24×24x12’ shop. I intend on eventually building two, one for each side of my shop. My filters came in a few days ago, so I designed it in Sketchup tonight. Fan is a 220V 4-speed blower my FIL gave me from a furnace he replaced in a building; he’s an HVAC guy, so I can sometimes score good, used motors and blowers from him. Case i...

Garage Re-Do #16: Air Filter Arrived!

03-06-2009 04:24 PM by MyOldGarage | 3 comments »

That’s a peek down the inside of the new Wynn Environmental filter - the 9E300BL one. I’m anxious to get some cutting done and get this puppy mounted on my Grizzly dust collector. Once I get it mounted and that, I’m going to move it over to a more permanent location and run one trunk of at least 6 inch pipe to the unit. The only problem with that is the PVC to “air pipe” sizing. It’s just frustrating to measure stuff and see the differences. I can...

Shop Projects #1: Air Filter

10-02-2017 01:15 PM by BrettGoodermote | 2 comments »

One of the downsides to a small attic shop is the crazy amount of dust in the air. I have some windows I can open while it is nice out, but even that only has a limited effect. After browsing the internet I decided it was time to make an air cleaner. I did not want to make a major investment in a fan, and the typical box fan was just not powerful enough in my opinion. We use a Lasko Wind machine in the living room and bedroom and these fans are GREAT!! I happened to catch an end of the sea...

Workshop #2: A little Safer

02-07-2008 04:22 AM by clieb91 | 6 comments »

Ok, So a little while back I posted a question about air filters and building one. Since then thanks to some Christmas money and a clearance at HD I actually purchased a Rigid Air Filter. I finally got it mounted this past week after few modification to the mounting concept. It seems the prefab floor joist they used to build this house are not what people think of when they tell you to mount it using the floor joists. So I added a little insulation to the ceiling and strapped the unit up. It...

Out w/the Old, and In w/the New

04-03-2015 12:04 AM by Roger | 26 comments »

Thnx to Jerry for selling me on this deal from Grizzly a while back. I mean it too. Thnx, Jerry. I bought this lil fine piece of filter for me and my lungs. As you see, “out w/the old”, LOL, the ole box fan did the trick for quite some time. I’m sure this Air Filter from Grizzly will be a big help with the dust floaters in the shop. Work safe, Work healthy, and, stay healthy so you can work safely. here’s the old: here’s the new: here’s what came in t...
