found wood #4: quick and dirty homemade dolly (for moving huge logs)

06-12-2009 12:31 AM by Gary Fixler | 6 comments »

If you recall the enormous gum tree logs I rescued recently, you might have wondered how I was going to move them all. Crushing manly strength alone? Nah, I was still pretty shot after lifting them into the truck in the first place. I slapped together a dolly out of scrap 2×4s (left over from the log rack shelves) with deck screws and some pocket holes (and screws), and a pair of rubber wheels and matching axle bolts that I ended up not needing for another project about a month back. ...

Turning Chess Pieces #5: Queens

02-15-2008 12:02 AM by Chessnut | 3 comments »

Welcome to another installment of the chess corner. Today’s topic is turning queens on the lathe.A queen’s base diameter is usually around 1 3/4” and the height around 3 3/4”. I use a caliper to measure while turning and turn everything gradually usually in three parts. The base, the stem of the piece and the crown and bring a pencil to the workpiece while it’s still turning after it has been turned round to mark the three segments and the decorative rings. This ...

Steve's 2x4 Challenge #2: It takes shape

01-28-2008 02:51 AM by SPalm | 16 comments »

Getting much closer. The finally assembly takes shape. It is a Krenov type cabinet. Maybe a disservice to the Master trying to build one out of a 2×4, but I wanted the largest piece of furniture that I could build, and this is what appeared. It has been fun. I am trying to figure out how to complete it. The door is not attached. It is about an eighth of an inch thick. The plan was to glue a block to the inside top and bottom of the door and use finishing nails as hinge pins. T...

Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 #7: The end is near !

01-21-2008 01:17 AM by Zuki | 9 comments »

Well the end is getting near for Project X – 2×4. I had a little “oopsie” when dry fitting the pieces and had to rely on my homemade edible glue to stick the “oopsie” back together. Actually there are better words to express how I felt, but as this is a family site . . . “oopsie” will do just fine. The pics above are from yesterday and I have arranged Project X and its twin in order to deceive the average woodworker. You can only decipher what it actually is if you ha...

Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 #6: And the beat goes on

01-14-2008 12:43 AM by Zuki | 5 comments »

Managed to get out in the shop this weekend. The weather was really strange . . . +5 and rain. Lots of snow gone. I finished off the remainder of the dovetails. Staying inside the pencil lines and cutting straight were the biggest challenges. I also found that chopping out the tails with a chisel was a bit of a pain because the spruce would collapse and not cut clean. Took a bit of work cleaning the pins and tails . . . but in the end they all fit together with a satisfying “cluk”. ...

Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 #5: One Word - Pictures

01-11-2008 02:11 AM by Zuki | 8 comments »

Ok . . . I have been put under tremendous peer pressure to provide pics because of the NPDH rule. Not making dust this evening but I did convince DW to take a few snaps. Note to self – get DW new digital camera so I can inherit hers. The first two pics show my first ever attempt at hand cut dovetails. I am happy with the way it came out. I just have to practice more to get better. Here are two pics of Project X. The top snap shows the top section of Project X. There is o...

Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 #4: Dovetailing (NPDH)

01-10-2008 04:15 AM by Zuki | 6 comments »

I did not get out to the shop last night . . . rough day at work drained the good right out of me. I did get out tonight to work on dovetails. Well . . . I did better than I expected. Now I’m not saying I going to win any awards for my dovetail joinery, but the four pieces of the top did fit together. On my practice run I found that the Irwin Dovetail saw I had purchased was just to rough on the spruce. So I put it away. I found the best saw was my Stanley Japanese pull saw . . . un...

Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 #3: Making Dust on Project X

01-08-2008 04:08 AM by Zuki | 7 comments »

This evening I checked another item off my list for Project X. I spent a couple of hours calculating, measuring, cutting, cussing, planeing, cleaning, moving and a few other “ings” I seem to be forgetting. Due to some strategic use of my planer (some would call it an accident) I managed to squeeze another 2 key pieces out of the 2×4. Exxxxxxcellent. Well . . . DW was not up for taking pictures tonight . . . so the “no pictures, did not happen” does not apply. Tomorrow night I ...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

01-07-2008 04:16 AM by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 #2: The lumber has landed

01-07-2008 12:16 AM by Zuki | 10 comments »

Well DW and I went X-Country skiing this morning. It was a beautiful day. When we returned I worked on my cut list calculations for my XXXXX. I was surprised to see that I can actually make two XXXXXs instead of one. Or to look at it another way . . . I have spare parts just in case I screw up the dovetails. This evening I decided to sift through my pile of construction grade 2×4s that I store in my shop (all two of them) to look for the best one. Here am I holding my stick. ...
