Health Warning

I just read Larry’s blog “Dust”, posted on November 14th. It reminded me of this article I placed in my woodworking club’s newsletter. This article first appeared in the 1988 woodworking magazine, Chit Chats and was written by Tom Frazer.” Although perhaps an extreme case, it is a reminder of the hazards of inhaling wood dust. I encourage members to wear dust protection equipment when woodworking. _ “As I type these words, my breathing is being assisted by pur...

Making a Compound Miter Joint

12-25-2006 10:52 PM by Don | 3 comments »

[The following is an article I wrote for a woodworking club’s newsletter. It’s about making the small box I have just listed in My Projects showing the compound miter joint. Click on the links as you read to see pictures.] Sometimes the simpler they look, the more difficult they are to make. In the small box shown here, I was challenged with a joint that I had not preciously seen. I don’t know what it’s called, but I refer to it as an “interlocking miter joint”. It’s a combinat...

It's nice to be here

I just posted my first project, and I wanted to say thanks to those who have added positive comments…even negative is ok, as long as it’s constructive. This seems to be a place where I can find anything from philosophy to sawdust. That’s great on both counts.I’ve already learned some valuable info about glues that helped me in my project. I’m looking forward to more. By the way, in answer to a couple of questions in the comments, I used maple from Home Depot..wha...

Wooden Timber Joints, Tree Nails and Saint Nicholas: ....and so tis the early hours of this Christmas morning and as I sit here and ponder the wonder of it all…. Wooden timber joints, tree nails and Saint Nicholas…. or maybe; mortise and tenons, wood pegs and your saintly neighbor here at www.lumberjocks.com! Look closely at the picture here of these timber beams dating back to the 1700’s and you will see they are joined at the joints by hand cut, white oak pegs of ...

... and all I can really think about is how few projects I got done this year that I would have liked to give for presents. When I try to think back through the year and figure out why I haven’t been as active this year, it doesn’t take me long to remember in the past 12 months I’d gotten engaged (March 31st), planned a wedding (complete with kilts and a piper and an Irish Band and a reception at an Irish Pub), and then was married by October 14th. That took up some of...

Self Impossed Boundaries

12-24-2006 11:59 AM by Don | 2 comments »

[This also posted in Coffee Lounge blog.] I purchased my first woodworking equipment in August ‘01 which was my entry into woodworking. So I’ve only got five years of woodworking experience under my belt. There is just so much more to learn and to attempt. In my mid forties I made a phenomenal personal discovery. Most of the limitations I faced in life were set by me. The many things that I thought I couldn’t do were simply things that I determined I wouldn’t do. The limitations were, i...

Blogging...

12-24-2006 02:58 AM by Ethan Sincox | 0 comments »

Wow. You know, I actually DIDN’T mean to stir anything up with that criticism blog entry… I’ve done journal writing for a long, long time – probably since grade school – and I guess I’m not really used to other people reading it and commenting on my thoughts. Not that I’m trying to discourage that action in any way! I quite enjoy the interaction and energy it has generated! I’m really trying to approach my blog in much the same way as I a...

The Road of Imagination: ....the artist is one who dwells in the lofty clouds of inspiration; and how does this one get to that place of being, except they have chosen to opt out of playing to please the many and by doing so, there has appeared before them an open door, ”....and to the one who knocks, it shall be opened”, this open door leads to that which is called the road of imagination…. “He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands a...
