Making a Nicker
Last week I scored this lovely wooden moving fillister plane for all of $10 at a flea market. It’s in great shape other than the obvious missing nicker. Time to have a go at working metal. I got some O1 tool steel, pulled out my grinder and files and made me a nicker. All told it took me a couple of hours to form the exact shape. I still need to refine the cutting edge a bit more. And of course, I’m going to harden and anneal it. For a more step-by-step with lots more photos, see http://www.keithpeters.org/?p=1142
