Five Projects to Help Kids Learn the Craft of Nailing

Looking back at the first year I taught woodworking my main mistakes were making projects too difficult and assuming kids could use tools, at least a little. Wrong. Most kids had never picked up a tool, and the ones who had really didn’t know how to use them. Nailing is a perfect example. Kids emphasize pounding, which is not surprising. They don’t pay attention to where the nails go. There was never a thought to drilling a pilot hole first (how would they know) and when they tried to nail two boards together the boards were impossible to hold.
