07-29-2021 11:57 PM by bandit571 | 5 comments »

Picked about 24 bft of 1×6 Ash last Monday…and in search of a Project to use it on… When I thought about…this mess.. Three cardboard boxes, plus stuff that didn’t quite fit….sitting on top of an Old Coffee Table….might keep the table as a base? Maybe a Tool chest…..got to be better than … This thing ( will be heading to the curb..)But…maybe a chest of tool drawers? Not sure about the number of drawers, yet…or their s...

Part 2: Panels flattened, web-frames started, is it August yet?

08-01-2021 10:18 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

So….panels are now out of the clamps….? Not exactly, but.. First they will need a bit of trim work…square the ends, too. Handsaw? No…Unless this counts as such.. A Vintage saw? 6” version. Needs a way to guide it along, too…..rip fence from the tablesaw can also be used for other chores.. I mark the cut line first, then use the saw’s foot plate to mark the distance between the blade and the edge of the plate…square that line a...

08-02-2021 02:03 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok…plan for shoptime….Thin the top and bottom parts from 7/8” to 3/4”.....did not go well…..got the two for the top compartment,,barely…..will need to plane off the burn marks. Decided not to do the parts for the bottom web frame.. Set both aside for a little while…have layout work to do.. Laying out for sockets to house sliding dovetails in…need 4 per side….goal is to run a guided router across…need to mark where the bit̵...

Part 4: Needed a router table?

08-04-2021 10:26 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

There IS one in the shop…somewhere…need to re-arrange the shop, anyway….make it easier to switch out the dryers….ah…there it is….move the tablesaw back a bit….and bring it out to be seen.. That “fence” is the same one I use on the tablesaw, and to guide the circular saw…and the router….Needed two wrenches to change out the cutters,,,the same 2 that my DeWalt #610 uses, BTW.. Except, the router hanging under the table is b...

Part 5: Dados and dry fits

08-08-2021 12:59 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Catching up a bit…router table has been put away….tablesaw brought back out. Set up a Stanley #45, Type 4 to mill a couple dados In hind-sight, I should have added the Cam rest…as this was hard to keep from tipping to either side..mainly to the left…First, I had it set for 1/4” deep.. Discovered the spurs were a bit on the DULL side…got a bit..chippy.. Plywood to get for high spots…old, plain candle to help ease the plane through the cu...

Part 6: We have glue up!

08-09-2021 01:03 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

One thing lead to another…was almost as bad as herding cats…not quite, but close…Drawer dividers kept sliding in and out usually when I was adding a clamp to that exact spot…..kept the mallet handy, to “resolve” any disputes That thin section of sliding dovetail? both front ones had cracked, and needed glued back in place..more clamp Then, along the front, where the floor board resides in the rebate….bead of glue was added in the rebate, then...

Part 7: Drawer Build 101, well, it is a start..

08-11-2021 02:30 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Going to be a few of these Drawer Building blogs….each has it’s own set of issues….First off, need a few parts milled up….to see how far I can get….with what is left of the lumber stash…so.. We have a few blanks for drawer fronts….need a few sides.. 7 out of the 10 I needed…still a couple fronts short… Bring another plank to the shop. Even milled backs for the top 2 drawers….that need to be quite a bit thinner than the sid...

Part 8: Drawer Build 102, I hate Mondays

08-11-2021 02:52 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Lumber run to start off the day..two planks at 3/4” x 6” x 48”, and two at 3/4” x 6” x 75”, about 10 bft? Price?Total was $7….about the only luck for the day…as Old Man Murphy decided to join in…Drawer #2 came out of the clamps….test fit showed some sticky spots…plane to clean those up,,try again.. Well, I could maintain that little gap with the rest of the drawers…we’ll see…Drawer #1…was a fighte...

08-11-2021 12:40 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Drawer #1 came out of the clamps, and didn’t fly apart…good start. Test fit into the case.. And..that was as far as it went in…we have ways.. Planed the high points down a bit…try again.. While I was at it..I added a screw to the back corners… Counter sunk, of course…last of the first stash of Ash was hauled to the shop…after which Old Murphy was fired..Drawer #5 needed two sides milled for length and width.. Done. Drawer #3…ne...

Part 10: Drawer #4...

08-12-2021 12:25 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Needed to sharpen a few items, too….spurs on the Stanley 45 were bad...This one needed sharpened up….the other one? Only reached to be flush with the edge of the skate….replaced it with a spare from the Stanley 45’s case…and sharpened one of the un-sharpened lobes….NOW the plane can score 2 lines across, so I can plough a dado, or two.. One other item needing work…I have a WR #62…was getting DULL, area under the blade had filled up with &#...

Part 11: Thursday in the shop, a dovetail tutorial....

08-13-2021 04:56 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Hybrid Shop….I use what will get a task done….doesn’t always involve hand tools, nor always power tools…usually a blend of the two..so…when building these drawers, I have been using both a router table and hand chopped ways.. Thursday was about a 3 hour tour…to get ONE drawer into the clamps…and another to get it’s handle installed.. Drawer #3 would like a handle, please. Laid out the locations for the 2 bolts ( in pencil) and then drill...

Part 12: A LAZY Friday

08-14-2021 12:35 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Lets see…between errands, a Rust Hunt, and the heat….wasn’t too energetic for the shop work….Drawer #5 ’s Front was a bit on the rough-sawn side…decided to try and smooth it out a bit.. Both faces….may turn around and do the same to the 2 sides, later today? Drawer #4…out of the clamps! Cauls needed a “WHACK” to get them to leave…Had a couple dovetails sitting a bit proud….planed them level….a few gaps were ...

08-15-2021 01:03 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Had Laundry Detail this morning (Saturday) which means I get to hang around waiting for the machines to get done…also means a bit of shop time, while I am standing there… Drawer sides….both are a bit rough..how rough? And NO, that is not “curl” showing up…plane in use? Wood River #62..for now…results? Hmm, looks a bit better, don’t it?Next? Time to get “Groovy” The other one seems to have thought I said something abo...

Part 14: The Sunday Funnies?

08-16-2021 04:33 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

I had a couple tasks to get done today…one..Haul a plank to the shop, so I can cut it into 3 pieces to make the panel for the lid…standing in at 3/4” x 5-3/4” x 6’4”...it seemed go out of it’s way to bump into, catch on, and otherwise bang into everything on the way…. can’t use the bench and a handsaw for the cutting, this time around…had to try with the tablesaw….wanted 3 pieces about 24-3/4” long…trying to cut ...

Part 15: Plan B? Maybe...

08-19-2021 05:05 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Chapter should be titled “The Lid” Not much of anything went right….the plan to use a router to mill a tongue around all 4 edges of the panel? Looked good on paper…but only IF the panel is square to begin with…the 4 skirt boards? How. after squaring up the panel and needing the long skirt to fit the new size…and NOT cut them…do they turn out to be 1/2” too short? To the point I had to go back and make two new long skirt boards from scr...

08-21-2021 07:42 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Ok…getting caught up…Thursday was a wasted day….Friday was errands and yard sales…this morning? Before setting out on the road…got a few things done.. The sides meet the lid with a bevel…router bit got close…needed the WR #62 to adjust the bevel to meet up with the lid…once THAT was done…then the Piano hinge was surfaced mounted ..And..the lid opens nicely! Then the entire outside, other than the plywood back, was given a coat of st...

08-24-2021 04:20 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

getting this wrapped up, and about ready to send upstairs….I did try the compartment out, to see how a group of planes would fit… 2 Smoothers ( KK 4, and Millers Falls No. 9) 2 Jack planes ( Millers Falls No. 15, WR #62) a Block plane(Stanley 9-1/2)and a Stanley #80 scraper….About doubled the weight of the tool chest… Coat of Clear Gloss Poly has dried, was rubbed down with some fine grit sandpaper.. getting rid of all them nibs…I also used a buffer to ...
