Part 1: Start up

07-05-2021 11:14 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok…still had a few bits of thin, and not so thin scraps, just sitting around.. Hmmm, one can be a lid panel, the other can be split into 2 panels for the sides of the box… Rip the bad sections off, to match the width of the side panels…and we have 2 end panels. Should be enough here, IF I rip these all into 3/4” x 3/4” sticks….I can make the frames to go around the panels…and come up with a lidded, frame and flat panel box…hmmm.. ...

Part 2: trying for one glue-up

07-06-2021 10:01 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Need to mill a few tenons…so the rails will fit into the stiles….and match the length of the panel.. Set this to the thickness of the panels, to help size the tenons..Wanted a snug, but not too snug fit… Close.. Tried a dry fit….fine tuned a couple spots…then the glue up could commence ( herding of cats, comes to mind..) Creaks a bit, but no “CRACKS”...must be a good sign? Let this sit a day…repeat for Side #2 Fitting the panel t...

Part 3: Out of the clamps, 2 sides get together

07-08-2021 03:23 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Trying to match the 2 up… With side #1 having “issues” was a hair LONGER than Side #2, and one leg was sticking it’s foot out…Tablesaw to correct both ends, rather than all from one end…Clamped the two sides together…. Ok…Not sure if it is #1 or #2….need to fix that edge….beltsander AND a plane.. getting close….had to work on both ends, BTW. Finally got that chore done….removed ONE clamp, carefully rotated t...

Part 4: Got one end done..

07-09-2021 07:34 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

And trying to get #1: End done…. There is a dry fit to fine tune. Had to mill tenons on the ends of the rails. Make sure the panel would fit. Shows where the tenons will be….then spread some glue, and chase some parts.. It was getting glued up, whether it liked it, or not…..like trying to herd cats… Meanwhile… #2 End: Dry fit wasn’t quite right…panel was the hold up…was too fat, a hair too wide in the beam, and a hair too lon...

Part 5: 2nd End glued up...

07-10-2021 04:08 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

And then cleaned up and….and….another glue up? Remember this thing? Gaps have been addressed…Panel does fit a bit better ( saw blade width too long, was causing that gap)...Decided to try me luck gluing it all together… One c clamp was thrown away…chased a couple parts across the bench…one even “escaped” to the floor….like it or not, this WAS getting glued up! Let this thing sit overnight…... Next day…clamps came o...

Part 6: Clamps removed, panel cleaned up, slips installed

07-11-2021 02:15 PM by bandit571 | 4 comments »

Was a wee bit busy, yesterday…Filled up with some “cheap” gas ( $2.92/gal.!) then walked through a Community Garage Sale event….didn’t buy a thing…came back home for Lunch…...then head for the shop..for a couple hours (2) First off, clamps needed to be removed…slowly. listening for any creaks, groans, and cracking sounds, NOT coming from me…had to flip the box over, to get to the last few clamps… Then back up onto it̵...

Part 7: Bottom installed, lid into the clamps

07-13-2021 05:51 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok..Removed the clamps holding the slips in place….grab a piece of 1/4” plywood ( 5mm? Luann?) make 2 marks…one for length, one for width…then connect the 2 with a framer’s square…then over to the bandsaw.. Not only follow the straight lines….I was even splitting them!...then a test fit into the box… Oooooh, we got lucky…Pop this back out, bead of glue brushed around on the slips…and set the panel down into the glue…but, ...

Part 8: Lid attached, started on a finish (no stain, this time..)

07-18-2021 02:38 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Ok..Box first…front and back bottom rails sit lower then the ends do…one is really low down…got out 2 routers.. The Craftsman has a round-over bit…the DeWalt #610 has a edge trimmer…because the bit has a 1/2” shank. Between the two… Was able to match the ends to the front and back bottom rails…next, needed to round that lid a bit.. Along the ends… and.. Along the front and back of the lid’s top edges..and any spots I m...
