Part 1: Resaw work to start

06-03-2021 07:27 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

6 decent sized leftovers, problem being they are too thick…..3/4” would be nice for a large project….but not for a fancy little box. Solution would be to resaw them to 3/8” thickness. bandsaw more or less refuses such a job…..leaves more waves than the Mid Atlantic Ocean….hmmm Ok, set up the rip fence on the tablesaw, and raise the blade as high as it can go…. Blade is 8-1/4”, that is all the saw can handle…boards are a might wi...

Part 2: Bring on the planes

06-08-2021 10:10 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Time to flatten the boards a bit.. Clamped the narrower of the longer boards into the vise…run a jack plane across to knock down the high spots.. A “Before & After”....and then after the other half was done… Not too bad? Set #2?!https://s3.amazonaws.com/vs-lumberjocks.com/quel2cp.jpg!Jointed the edges a bit.. There was a beltsander in use, as well…Set #3 took a bit more work… Decided to use the tablesaw, and trim this up as a 4-square,...

Part 3: Started on the corners

06-11-2021 01:38 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Well, 3 out of 4, anyway. Decided on how narrow to make these 4 boards..came up with 3-5/8” width…Tablesaw to rip 4 boards to that….squared the ends…wound up with a pair of 8” and a pair of 12” blanks.. Went through and jointed the edges a bit….one had a taper to it..HAD. We have ways.. Fancy Jointer..all because I want each pair to sit together in the vise….so I can do a bit of lay out work…at least on the two shorter ones.. h...

Part 4: Last corner done, dry fit, then the glue and Clamp Flash Mob

06-15-2021 01:11 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, rest of the corners at done… This was Corner #3…but it was the last of the corners milled…same as before…Enough that I could put all four corners together into a dry fit… So, how did the last corner turn out? The one on the right. Not too hateful? While I had this all set up, had a stack of clamps stop by….needed to get preset, as to which sized clamp can be used… Just 8 clamps? Hmm….we’ll see….noted I would need...

Part 5: Out of the clamps, lid work

06-15-2021 06:25 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, clamps can come back off…SLOWLY.. First 8..only leaves.. The 4 longer ones. I left the spacers inside…as one side wanted to bow in a bit..still, clean up began… Beltsander to trim down any longer fingertips…smooth plane to level the rest…worked my way all around the outside of the box….also, checked on how well the grain flowed around the corners…I hope..Corner #1… #2 (note the fat finger?) I THINK this is #3 corner… ...

Part 6: Slips are showing, round-overs done

06-16-2021 07:42 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

So…started up the mitersaw…and cut four slips for length. Each gets a bead of glue, and a couple clamps….started on the longer sides, attempting to pull the bowed in side back out to straight…then work my way around from there… Some joints were better.. But, always seems to be That One… Oh well…going to be covered with a plywood floor above, and a brass foot below. Set this aside for a day..Removed the 3 main clamps from the lid blank.. ...

Part 7: Lid re-worked, hinges installed...maybe a PIP

06-19-2021 03:07 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Well, first things first…clamps came off of the box…decided the top edges needed to all match each other, so the lid will indeed sit flat when I close it…we have ways.. Since this Millers Falls No.9 was sitting out on the bench….might as well use it. 2 corners were a bit higher than the other two….not any more…..same with the slips, and the bottom edges of the box…. Same plane….keep checking until things will sit flat….like the lid...
