Part 1: Day 1, resaw the scrap pile..

Had a stash of Ash scraps to process….some wound up right in the burn pile…others were resawn dow to 1/2” thick… Some were ripped down a bit….as 6” wide stuff was a bit rough to resaw….with a 8” tablesaw…. And there was a stash of very thin cut-offs…..tray dividers? maybe some for a lid? used a jointer plane, to make a few glue joints fit better.. had a few boards that were a tad uneven…thickness wise…ran th...

Part 2: Finger joints, and a glue up...

of a blank for a lid..of sorts. Sorted through the narrow stuff….trying to find enough that matched…got out the second batch.. Might be a few….they needed a bit of work,,,,but, to do that, I needed the tablesaw cleared off, and a few clamps handy…. Let these sit a bit. Ok, rip fence set up…about 1-3/4” width….run all the narrow slats through….reset to 1-1/2” width, and run the bad edges through…..resort….then the jun...

Part 3: 2 more corners, a bottom, and a glue-up

More of the same….layout…saw the lines, chop out the waste Then, use these to lay out the matching fingers.. Then, saw leaving the lines, chop out the waste…try a dry fit… And, IF you need a mallet to join the 2 halves….should be tight enough…then, repeat for the last corner.. Next? Need a jig set up… Dig out the Stanley#45… Need to reset the depth stop… To 3/16” deep. Cutter is a #12 (1/4” wide)....time...

Part 4: too long in the shop

And…I don’t get paid for overtime….usually I work from 2 to 3 hours max….today? 5 hours! Ok, clamps were slowly removed… No creaks, no cracks were heard…except when a mallet was used to dislodge one stuck caul..clamps also came off the lid blank…later…. So, for the first hour, or so…I worked on cleaning things up… Where the fingers stood a bit too proud…sander took them down until smooth…safer than using a pl...

Part 5: Glue-ups....and more..

Ok, worked on the lid a bit….panel wasn’t fitting just right…..grooves were preventing things from settling all the way in…we have ways.. Changed the cutter from 1/2” wide, to 1/4” wide….had a few high spots to level…. Was finally able to spread some glue, and add some clamps…inside looked good….topside? Will be a work in progress….bad sign…fingers way too long….. Cut a few thin slats to size….and...

Part 6: Catching up

Between halftimes..a day or two off…was never enough getting done, to write about.. Lid was test fitted..a few times…worked on getting gaps closed up Tray was test fitted….then.. Corners and edges trimmed and sanded…dremel brought out the slightly round off the edges on the handle….and anywhere else it could reach. Sanded to 220 grit…and then a coat of stain was brushed on, and then wiped down.. Waiting on the box. Hinges were installed.. ...
