Ok…that time of year again….Christmas Gift Exchange…..Grandson’s “Better Half” is mine this year…thinking about building a chest of some sort….blanket….Hope….something along those lines… had already went out and bought some Ash lumber..About 25 bft ($20) already planed to 3/4’ thickness…and averaging about 6” wide…11 boards total So..thinking I could do something like Norm Abram had made….sea...

Part 2: A very long, busy Day 2

11-05-2020 04:42 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Started out at 1100hrs…main shop time ended around 1430hrs….then a few return trips while on Laundry Detail last night…trying to remember all the stuff as I worked along…. Ok, started by hauling Plank #3 to the shop…moved the tablesaw out to where I could do a few saw cuts…needed two blanks to make the 4 long rails and 1 blank for a pair of dividers that go between them… had to work around a couple bad ends….next, set up the rip fence,...

Part 3: day 3, all 2 hours worth

11-06-2020 08:06 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Had the measurements for the raised panels….needed a way to make a panel to that size..3/4” x 10-3/4” x 12-3/8”.. Boards are already 3/4” thick…and I can just cut the 1×6 into 11” long sections….it was that last one, that proved difficult….so, I hauled a 6’ (more or less) long plank to the shop…meaning not only did I have to duck me head about the 4th step from the shop floor….that plank had to as well….then...

Part 4: Day #4

11-07-2020 03:30 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

another 2 hours worth….sharpened the mortise chisel…and put it back to work.. The bevel had become rounded a bit,,,,flattened that back out… Seems to work much better, now….I also changed the bandsaw blade..old one was getting a bit too dull, was burning the wood, more than just making a cut..cuts better, now Only had 3 mortises to do… Then I could stash the last frame over by the first 3 frames.. 2 end frames, a front and a back frame…time t...

Part 5: Day #5...meh

After a great start, the day went downhill…maybe worked too long in the shop? Nah… Ok..last 2 panels needed glued up….the pieces needed a lot more edge jointing than before, to avoid joints that look like this..() wound up fight one of those later….For some reason, I also needed to add a second caul to each end.. needed larger c clamps…managed to get both panels glued up, and set aside, out of the way.. Next..needed to square up the other 4 panels..d...

Part 6: day #6, we have frame glued up

11-09-2020 04:16 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Finally. That broken panel has been fixed, last rebate done, too…..then fussed around with a dry fit, until.. It actually did fit…even the “Inside” looked good.. next panel….tried to flatten a face…there was a large knot over in one corner….planes were having issues with it.. Decided to “cheat” a bit, will still involve hand planes, but…..tablesaw blade was tilted to 15 degrees, or so…to use the zero clearance over...

Part 7: Day 7?

11-10-2020 03:29 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Not a fan of working on Mondays….had a couple road trips to do, anyway…panel for the lid…had 3 planks left…by the time I get them ready to glue up….I’d be at least 2” too narrow…so, quick trip to pick up one more plank of 3/4” x 6” x 6’ Ash….spent a whopping $3 for it, too…. Second trip of the day….harbor Freight for some sanding belts ( the red ones, do NOT get the blue one) as the ones I have were getting...

Part 8: Day 8, 2 steps forward, one step back

11-11-2020 05:15 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Well, the projected Start time was 1300hrs….was. Trip to the store for grocery items….came back home, and tried to get a jig built… I had just got that piece of Pine scrap ripped for width, the 1/2” plywood was cut for length (to match the pine piece’s length) and was trying to joint a decent edge …..A roofing contractor, sent by the Landlord, was here to “measure” my roof, and get an estimate for a new metal roof for the house….wait...

Part 9: Day 9...1 hour, dry fitting only

11-11-2020 09:26 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Still worn out from yesterday….the two ends needs to be released from their clamps and cauls….cleared off the tablesaw….and decided to just dry fit all the sides…..First corner…framer square to make sure the corner is square…1 c clamp holding the “foot” together.. Second corner, same as the first….no glue involved, today… I’m thinking THIS will be the back of the chest…..more to set up the army of clamps I’...

Part 10: Day #10/11

11-14-2020 12:55 AM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Kind of combining the two sessions…neither were all that long…. Decided to go ahead and glue the chest up….had all the clamps ready..I thought…Started by taking the dry fit apart…except, I left one end in place. Applied to to the other end’s tongue, and clamped that in place with just a c clamp…..then the other end could be removed, glued, and installed…. Then a bead of glue along the remaining two tongues….and then the Brigade of...

Part 11: Day #12....

11-15-2020 02:38 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

First order of the day….I had to clear the bench for action… Sorted through the cut-offs to find a decent enough board to make bread board ends with… So I can choose the best 2…..right now, two are acting as cauls…to keep a panel flat…more on that in a moment.. tablesaw to cut the lid blanks to the same length, and square the ends a bit….then start jointing edges for a glue up Thought I could use the old No. 7c…..was a bit too much f...

Part 12: Day 14...

11-17-2020 01:07 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

As day 13 consisted of making sure nothing in the shop would be on the floor, in case the Gulley-Washer of a Thunderstorm made the creek through the shop rise, again….So Day 14: had to get the chest down off of the tablesaw, where it was sitting ON the glued up lid blank…plan was to sand it down to 120 grit….the WAS the plan….decided to change the bit in the Craftsman Router from a dovetail to a cove bit… And work my way around all four sides….the fe...

Part 13: Day 15...

3 hours, to do two tasks? Either I am getting slow in me old age, or the tasks needed the extra time… First off…can’t do much with that lid IN the bench vise….with clamps sticking out everywhere…so., clamps came off, and put away, won’t be needing them anymore…I hope..Plopped the lid down on the cleared off bench.. Still had some high spots, mainly on the underside….planed those off with the #3 smoother….did a test fit.. It did ...

Part 14: Day #16 (already?)

11-20-2020 02:52 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

thanks to some shopping the other day…we now have some hinges to install….and a box of planks for later, after the finish is done… well, had to smooth things out on this lid, first…kept the hinges and some tools at the ready…. Ok, then marked out where the hinges would need to go…to avoid some spots in the rails where the rail and stiles meet…Hinges also need to have the “barrel” facing down…means a few extra chops.. Router ...

Part 15: Day 17..time for a PIP?

11-22-2020 04:11 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Well…getting the lid attached was the tricky part….case was still sitting up on the tablesaw This was from before the stain AND varnish had been done….used the rip fence from the tablesaw to prop the lid in place, with one clamp on the lid, and a second clamp from the fence down to the far edge of the chest,,,so things didn’t move around while I used the VIX bit….then drove each screw in place…. Then stood the chest up on it’s own 4 feet, on the...

Part 16: Varnish, and some handles...almost done..

11-25-2020 04:25 AM by bandit571 | 4 comments »

Monday night, got bored…..decided to brush on the first coat of varnish…..wound up with a sore back…...rather than set the chest up on something…I left it sitting on the floor….varnished the underside of the main lid…and then closed the lid…...Then worked my way around all 4 sides…..and the top of the lid….and let that sit overnight…. Tuesday morning, figured I could check on the varnish, to see how it turned out…..lid was s...
