04-07-2020 10:23 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Had to happen…I build a new Tool Cabinet for the rest of the hand tools….and now the hand planes are feeling “Neglected”... The til beside them USED to be full of hammers, they have since moved over to the new “house”. So….bought some more 1×10s, and some 1×4s….First, I need to know how big to build what, and where. Hammer til was removed and sent to the firepit. Planes IN the til got moved out….the bigger ones to a coupl...

Part 2: Start on a corner

Ok, 2 planks hauled to the shop…Plan being, that these two would become the top, bottom and both sides of the cabinet…sides need 37-1/2” long parts, the other two need to be 30” long…out of a pair of 1×10 x 6’ boards. Can’t get to the tablesaw, not much room. The Mitre boxes? Boards are a hair too wide…so.. Two Disston D-8s….Panel saw was in the tool cabinet…Crosscut was over in the saw til…Full length was hav...

Part 3: four corners done

04-10-2020 02:56 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Shopping trip today….seems someone at Lowes has no idea what size boards go into what rack. When I bought that stack of 1×10s, and a pair of 1×4s….according to the labels of the rack…..turns out the 1×4s are 1×6….the 1×10s are 1×8s…..So, when I picked up a single 1×10 today….something didn’t look right….too late now…case will be made with the 1×8s ( $2 cheaper, anyway…) Normally, I buy 5mm ...

04-11-2020 01:57 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Twas a very busy day….3 sessions, in fact. Even the battery on the camera got “tired”...First off, needed to figure out what was the “Top” of the case, label it, and then.. Mark the Bottom. Laid out for the drawer dividers. I also needed to find out what length to cut the shelves to… Then the plan came out.. Then laid out the spacing for the shelves….used a scrap of Pine to help out.. Shelves were supposed to be 5-1/2” between t...

Part 5: A back, and some feet..and

04-12-2020 03:58 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

A start on the drawers. Removed the clamps today…lots of creaks, pops, groans….and that was from just ..me. Dang clamps weighed more than the wood case. hauled the plywood to the shop….set it aside for a couple minutes. Wanted to add a couple screws to each end of the shelves,,,to reinforce the dovetails…and a couple were loose, too. Then set the case over on it “feet” for a bit… Nothing really fancy. Plopped the plywood onto the bench&#...

Part 6: First drawer in the clamps

04-13-2020 05:24 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Took most of Sunday afternoon…but, didn’t have anything else going on…was “safer” in the shop, anyway.. First off…all those parts for 3 drawers needed fitted to the opening they were going to reside in…Sides needed their ends squared up better…and each pair had to match…they also needed the edges jointed to match each other, and still fit into the space they were to call home.. Like these two. Wound up clamping each pair in the vis...

Part 7: Drawer No. 1, No.2 in the clamps

04-14-2020 04:55 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Well, first there was a trip to Lowes this morning….bought the Plexiglass and 5 handles….and Lunch at the Burger King Drive-thru..to take back home to the Boss….as she hasn’t been out of the house in quite a few weeks. Next, after Lunch had settled…took drawer No. 1 out of that forest of clamps, and cleaned it up… Corners out front had little squares to trim flush. They cover the holes left by the groove for the drawer bottom. Sides were also planed...

Part 8: Last drawer, started on the doors..

04-16-2020 01:59 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok..drawer #2 was soon cleaned up, handled…and fitted to the opening… Got to thinking about some sort of molding around the drawers, and something for the doors to rest on…in the meantime…drawer #3.. Same as the other two…letting it sit a while…back to the molding…decided on some sort of square stock… But, the only way to get some, was to rip it down….Hmmm. decided to rip stock for stiles and rails, for the doors, too.. And ru...

Ok, last drawer was cleaned up, fitted to it’s new home. Handle included…so I get get it back out… Can either leave them all set back in, or bring them all out flush….which leaves..doors Along with hinges, a latch, a sheet of plexiglass to do both door windows…this thing came home…said to clamp a steel ruler along the cut line…make a lot of score cuts…then snap the waste off…well, it snapped, all right… Just not where I wa...
